I am getting tired of having to jump in the auto every time I need something at the grocery or hardware store. Is there a "planned town" somewhere in this area that is designed for walking to the shopping area, or maybe hopping in the golf cart, without having to drive the freeway?

Sandestin is a good bet for this, although it's in the scary 'forbidden zone' (West of Santa Rosa Beach) where many posters on this board rarely go :floor:

If you mean somewhere like "The Villages" down south...no.

Finding them in the same community is impossible at the moment. Most of the communities are resort and have only resort type stores. Perhaps you need a scooter.

Unless you plan on buying 4' x 8' sheets of ply for boarding up the windows 😀

If you lived in Grayton Beach you would never need a car. There is a hardware store and a small market, shopping, bars, restaurants, gym, offices, etc.
Most people would require a larger grocery. You could live in WaterColor or Seagrove Beach near Publix and bike to everything you need.

I have been down to seaside and many of the 30A communities and have not been impressed with the beaches or the infrastructure and for that matter the architecture.
I had several opportunities to buy on 30A and in fact decided on a centrally located and quiet community on old Hwy 98. There are many very upscale larger communities in sandestin like Kelly plantation and Regatta Bay that rival anything I saw on 30A.
Waiting for enlightnment.:idontno:

Add to it the many franchise fast garbage aka food, big box businesses, etc. To me, the area from the Factory Discount Stores to the Destin Pass is like town. From the Factory Discount Stores east to Bay County is more like country, or at least it used to be. Did I mention high rises? There is a huge difference in all of the aforementioned, not to mention there are many more people in the Sandestin/Destin area. I just call em like I see em.

I am glad we have all of those stores not too far away for my off-season trips for goods, but I dread the day they extend all the way to Bay County, connecting the dot in between.

Just goes to show ya, SJ, that beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.
It is ironic really, because I want to be around humanity and good resturaunts and shopping and the Bay and the ocean...all in walking distance. And on occasion, I would like to take a SHORT drive into the country to enjoy the trails and kayaking etc...your neck of the woods.
Sadly I think with sprawl that will likely happen, especially with affordable housing being planned and executed, your "neck of the woods" will be as urban as Destin is..I will have to drive further out..bummer.:(

You will probably have to drive north - near the border.
I noticed that one of you has a baby eggplant as your avatar and one of you has a Mercedes. They seem to reflect your differing tastes.

My comments were tongue-in-cheek satire - aimed at a few who occassionally exhibit elitist attitudes regarding 'their' communities along 30-A (albeit those East of Santa Rosa Beach). Last time I checked, the SoWal county line extends well to the West of 30-A and on occassion, the tone in some threads can be quite negative regarding these areas.
You & I share appreciation for communities to the West. We own on old 98 (as you do), and we also own on 30-A.
Not sure if that was enlightening, but I do enjoy the discourse ;-)

Just as an FYI Kurt, before I left Oregon a year ago, I owned a farm on secluded acreage just outside Portland. I had a greenhouse and raised all my veggies from seed collected from the previous years bounty.
My first heirloom tomato would be ready the first week of june, just in time for the warmer weather and some mouth watering tomato sandwiches.
My wife tired of the cold and rain in Oregon and it got worse after our first visit to South Walton about 3 years ago. So we decided to go for the sea and sun.
I miss my garden but I will garden again..soon. I will concede tho' that I love my cars!!

dsilvar, you are very correct in your statement that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When I refer to "your area," I do not intend it as a bad thing universally. It is just not my cup of tea. ;-) Also, I don't know that you can tell anything about a person by the looks of their avatar. I am as fascinated by the automobile as the eggplant. FYI - Ferrari does make tractors, too.

I want so badly to chime in about how good we have it with most of our basic necessities so close in South Walton, but I'm trying to show restraint.
Hint: I only put 22,000 miles on my car last year. That, my friends, is a huge improvement.

I agree. And I felt that way before Publix or Subway or Starbucks, but I seem to be in the minority.
