Does the article note what they define "drop" as? Is it quantity of sales or price of sales?

Closer to home here in Walton County--through June, SFH sales were down 16%, Condo sales were up 58% (preconstruction closings????), and lot sales were down 54%. However, unlike the majority of the country, sales were also down significantly in 2006 (SFH down 48%, condos down 55% and lots down 48%YTD in June 2006) so the cumulative decline in Walton County is probably near the top of the curve nationally.

HOWEVER, sales of SFH in June were actually up 1% over June 2006 and prices do seem to be firming up a bit in many areas even though inventory levels remain high.

From The Commerce Dept. Report today

Housing construction fell in all parts of the country except the Midwest which posted a 2.6 percent increase in July. Construction starts were down 11 percent in the South, 3.7 percent in the West and 1.3 percent in the Northeast.
The current housing slump is the worst since a downturn that occurred during an economic recession in 1990-91.
