Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe has been offered the head coaching position at Duke and is expected to accept the job, sources within UT?s football program told the News Sentinel on Thursday.

Also heard that Chavis might move to Columbia.

Cutcliffe wasn't successful coaching at Ole Miss. Don't know why Duke would think he could successfully coach there. That is why he came back to Tennessee as offensive coordinator. Hadn't heard anything Chavis. There are other good offensive coordinators out there, the Vols just need to find them. Randy Sanders wasn't any good that is for sure. And I think they could do better than Chavis also.

Every thing I've seen about Cutcliffe at Ole Miss was very complimentary and they were foolish to fire him. Maybe it was just Eli that made him look good there. It is clear though that when Cutcliffe left UT the offense suffered and has improved since his return. I would think it would be a problem if he leaves and not that easy to replace.

Who would you get that would be better than Chavis? He is well respected and another big reason for your success.

David Cutcliffe was 44 and 29 at Ole Miss.....that is lights out for them.
Ed Orgeron was 10 and 25. Nuff said.

Duke will be challenging for any coach. But I believe that Cutcliffe will do very well there and in 3-4 years, he will move on to a better HC situation....Truly a loss for the VOLS....

Well, I didn't follow Ole Miss football much, not even when Cutcliffe was coaching them. Yeah, it will be a problem if he leaves again, and apparently it is a given already. But regardless they will have to replace him. And obviously Chavis is being offered more money to move elsewhere and I'm sure he will go also. But I think the players on offense and defense don't always do what the coordinators instruct them to do all the time either. It is evident in some of the games. And how long was Cutcliffe at Ole Miss as a coach anyway? Just hope if they go they will wait until after the bowl game.

Cutcliffe was at Ole Miss from 200-2004. Tenessee writers are saying Fulmer may promote Trooper Taylor and that he may not be ready.

I don't have any feelings about Cut either way, but.....

This is an incredibly stupid hire by Duke. When you have a program that simply cannot recruit big, fast athletes, what do you do? You hire someone who can field a competitive team with smaller, slower kids. How do you do that? Run an option-based offense (a la what Paul Johnson did at Navy).

Duke had a chance to resurrect their program. Instead, they put another nail in its coffin. If Wake can field a competitive team, Duke can too. Unfortunately, they won't due to this hire.

And I thought Dookies were supposed to be smart. :idontno:

Yeah, you can see that in how they handled the lacrosse fiasco!😀

Actually it was 1999-2004. He left TN in 1998 during the break between the SEC championship and National championship to go to Ole Miss and then Randy Sanders called the plays for the National Championship game, which TN won. I think its funny that Sanders wasn't a good coach for Tennessee (IMO) but still was the OC for one of only two National Chamiponships for TN.

On another note, I believe it will also be a big loss for Tennessee not as much for Offense as for discipline. When Cutcliffe left, Tennessee became a train wreck due to the lack of discipline. Fulmer is NOT a disciplinarian and it showed as Cutcliffe was the team disciplinarian and not surprisingly once he got back to UT, those problems decreased dramatically. As for Chavis, I think that would be a great loss too as I don't know who I would get to replace him as Taylor is inexperienced.

All in all though it will be Ok if Chavis goes to Columbia so he can get used to coaching with Spurrier since Spurrier will probably come home to Tennessee  after Fulmer leaves. ;-)

UT FOOTBALL needs A Bruce Pearl. What UT doesn't need is Spurrier. These issues I'm not too concerned with, since Fulmer's contract is extended to 2012.

Coach C. was successful at Ole Miss, he just was not well liked by some boosters and had issues with Pete Boone. While Coach Cut was there we went to 5 bowls in 6 years and tie LSU in 2003 for the West Division and won the Cotton Bowl. Many fans at Ole Miss hated when he left.

He is very low key and not the media hound and celebrity wanna be that many coaches are and some very wealthy supporters at Ole Miss wanted someone with a name and higher media profile.

Certainly Eli was a huge part of the success of the team, but you can't expect a coach to replace that type of talent the very next year.

I wish him the best, he is a great guy with alot of class.

It is a loss for the Vols.

I agree aggie, they do need a Bruce Pearl for a football coach. If Fulmer and the Vols can win the bowl game, which they badly need to do, he might be around longer than that. But if Cutcliffe leaves, and Chavis also, then you can probably expect many more 5-6 seasons. :(

Can't wait for more 5-6 seasons, those are lots of funn. Let the recruiting begin.
