After 47 days in the field, 227 threatened gopher tortoises have been spared an inhumane death and 28 gopher tortoise eggs have been saved from a development site in Apopka, Fl. The Humane Society of the United States, Nokuse Plantation, D.R. Horton and Bio-Tech Consulting teamed up to rescue the tortoises and eggs from the Rock Springs Ridge subdivision before relocating them to a permanent home at Nokuse Plantation, a nature preserve in Walton County. The eggs started hatching on Sept. 6.
World Paddle For The Planet 2013 is a four-day eco-educational fundraiser festival culminating with a 24-hour paddle on beautiful Lake Powell, the largest coastal dune lake in the State of Florida and designated a "Pristine Florida Waterway". Festival events will be held in Carillon Beach and Camp Helen State Park October 10-13, 2013.
Dr. Sarah Schindele of Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) recently joined Leslie Kolovich on SUP Radio Show to discuss her work, the history and mission of CBA, and environmental and educational programs currently underway to promote the health of our diverse waterways of the Choctawhatchee (chock-tuh-hatch-ee) basin watershed.

While fishing off of the beach Grayton Beach, Florida I encountered thousands, if not tens of thousands, of Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) in what had to be a a jellyfish jubilee. This movie, as my other underwater movies, was recorded with a GoPro camera attached to a home made PVC drop stick weighted with BBs and attached to a heavy rod and reel. A small fin was also attached to the PVC tube to stabilize the sway motion as the camera was pulled through the water.

End of July Update: South Walton Turtle Watch (SWTW) is reporting the most current count of sea turtle nests is up to 55. Some of the first nests of the season are approaching 50-60 days and we should start to see hatchlings and/or their tracks to the water any day.
Of course we all love the beach but we also love the REAL FLorida - the swamps and creeks, the backwoods, the prairies and fields. We love the wildlife and the beautiful plants and trees! We also love learning all about it and our favorite place is just up the road in Freeport.
