Gulf World Marine Institute Receives Disney Conservation Grant

May 4, 2016 by SoWal Staff

Gulf World Marine Institute (GWMI) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Disney Conservation Fund after working in conjunction with New England Aquarium to care for 50 cold stunned sea turtles. The grant will help offset the costs of the rehabilitation process for the New England cold stunned sea turtles that have since been medically cleared and released into the Gulf of Mexico. The Disney Conservation Fund has donated nearly $30 million in grants to support conservation, and Gulf World is honored to have been recognized.

The Disney Conservation Fund was established in 1995 to combine support from both the Walt Disney Company and their guests to aid nonprofit organizations working to protect the planet and connect kids with nature. When Gulf World’s team of experts isn’t out rescuing dolphins and sea turtles, they’re educating kids and kids-at-heart about the fascinating animals with which we share our planet.

Gulf World by Dolphin Discovery in Panama City Beach creates memorable experiences for the entire family through entertaining animal shows, fascinating exhibits and hands-on interaction with marine life. Gulf World hosts special events and live concerts, daily animal shows, field trips and interactive programs for children in the community.

In addition to the stingray interactive program, kids can choose from a multitude of educational opportunities, including: Trainer for a Day; Swim with a Dolphin; Meet-n-Greet Sea Lions; Meet-n-Greet Dolphins; Dolphin Day Camp; Vet Camp; and Animal Therapy for Special Needs Children.

Gulf World Marine Institute, a 501c3 non-profit organization, responds to sick, injured and stranded animals, rehabilitates them and releases them into the wild. GWMI also serves as an educational resource to schools throughout our area. The Institute has rescued thousands of sick and debilitated marine animals since 1970.
