Unlike the Choctawhatchee Beach Mouse, the Choctawhatchee Beach Rat's habitat appears stable, and the population is steadily increasing. The Florida Wildlife Commission has instituted multiple conservation efforts to ensure long-term viability, requiring habitat surveys prior to any construction south of Interstate I-10 in Walton County.
