Went Floundering Last Night - Nov. 6
What a blast! Went out in the gulf last night floundering in my little 14 ft. john boat. My brother and I came home with several very nice flounders. Incredibly beautiful, too. Big moon (came up about 30 minutes after we started). Smooth seas, thanks to the north wind. Could see forever in the chrystal clear water. Basically just trolled a few feet off shore with the light shining from the bow. Before I went, finally broke down and got a fishing license from Yellowfin. Had been too busy to fish lately. With new rules, fees etc., needed anyway to fish from shore and backyard. Tip: I bought year license. Didn't think to ask how they notified you for renewal. Had signed out and paid before a gentle fisherman came in and said he was notified by email. At that time, it was too late to go back in and add email. So, next year plan on adding that to my information.
Some of the flounder were so close to shore that I think you could have gigged them from the beach.
The first night we went out it was also calm and warm. Cooled down a bit on our way in last night. Just pulled john boat over the sand bar from coastal dune lake and poled up and down the coast. No motor. The next night, had a small electric motor, but only used in lake. Saw hundreds of huge mullet near shore that night, too.
Wish I had Mike Cat's company to film. Saw lots of stingrays and the most eerie empty holes out in the gulf that they apparently make.
Tonight (Friday) may still be 'okay' conditions. Will have to watch what happens to the surf as Ida does her thing. May still be able to go after play, other entertainment or football game.

Excellent fishing report DLaker! I heard others were diving for flounder yesterday and caught quite a few. I will have to check the weather for tonight. Thanks!

Wow, neat story. I use to gig flounder quite a bit down in Grand Isle, even with it being a two hour drive from Houma Louisiana where I lived. I absolutely love gigging and love the taste of flounder.
I gigged here only once when my brother was visiting as I haven't procurred a light to go with my gig. Interesting about people diving for Flounder, too. I'd like to hear more about that. I sure have seen a number of Flounder as I snorkeled, although that practice is on hold until next year brings warm waters again. Thanks for sharing!

If your brother needs someone to go with him next time, have him give me a call.

I don't know if he is going out tonight, but the gulf is looking pretty good to me from where I sit watching a fabulous sunset. Winds are calm. The coastal dune lake you'll go out from is flat as a pancake. Temps aren't too bad for November, either. I'd call him now if I were you. The gulf waves do "sound" just a tad up so you may have to see how it is when you get down there. The moon won't be much help tonight. Although, depending how late you are out I understand there is a spectacular meteor shower going on later.
