Was thinking about surf fishing this weekend and didn't know if it was worth the time. Anything biting, baits?
Thanks
Beach Pirate
I hear that there are plenty of bluefish right now (and a few other species in lesser amounts). The guy I was talking to was using a spoon and getting plenty of action, but others were using live bait.
Yes, Bluefish seem abundant. Catch them with silver spoons, cut bait, or shrimp. There are large Redfish cruising the beaches, as well as a few Pompano. Those putting in the effort are definitely catching fish from the beach.
Sheepshead are being caught off of the old 331 bridge, near the pilings.

We went fishing this weekend. Started at the 331 bridge. No biters at all. We used live shrimp. I need to try beach fishing... I am new at this. Guess I will need a bigger reel? I think what I have was a good deal at Walmart... and not an Ocean Reel...Any suggestions?

We specialize in Surf Fishing.
Bring your current rod and reel by the store one day and we'll advise you on its suitablity for fishing from the beach. It may be fine or we could show you a few alternatives (starting at $39.95 for a Daiwa Saltwater combo). Once you learn a few basic things about how to read the water, which baits to use and why, then it's pretty easy.

Slight tangent - one of my uncles LOVES fishing, when is the best time for him to visit his favorite niece and go deep sea fishing?
Like so many things in life and fishing, the answer is "it depends". Experienced anglers often have a target species of fish in mind, which will be avaialable certain times of the year. Other folks just want to get out on a boat and catch whatever gamefish is available on that particular day.
Fish are caught in NW Florida year-round. We talk with our customers so that we understand their prior experiences, current expectations and preferences, number and age of people in the party, etc., and then plan a trip accordingly. We have a variety of captains, each with their own specialties.
Stop by our Seagrove store; we'd love to book a trip for your uncle.

carolina rig w/ pyramid sinker? Shrimp..what do you think I will have the most success with? I will def. come by your shop, it sounds great. I have a 9 ft. rod/reel combo but havent had to much success with it. In the spring I try for pomp's but what are some other fish and or bait that I could try?
Yes, take advantage of Yellowfin's offer to help. Remember to not think only about the real, but also the rod, especially when surf fishing. You need some length.

the rod is huge when it comes to surf fishing.........i typically use my pier getup (cause i'm a pier rat at heart) of a 9' 15-30 class medium/heavy action rod with a penn 706z reel
but anything that you feel good casting and can get a bait past the first sandbar will work fine..........the amount of weight you will need depends on the status of the surf and the current....typically 3-4 ounces will suffice
reel that will hold 250 yds of 20 lb test should suffice for larger species in the surf such as shark (smaller) and redfish...........a 12lb will work for everything else
cut mullet, bluefish, menhaden- work great for big redfish and sharks
shrimp works great for the pompano, bluefish, ground mullet and every trash fish you can think of
6/0 hook or bigger for the larger species.........2/0 for the small ones
