Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
If any of you watch "Survivor", the fall "Survivor" show - Cook's Island -- was just announced. My brother-in-law, Jonathan Penner (my husband's brother), is one of the contestants. Sooooo, we'll be watching it this fall (we usually don't watch it but we'll definitely be tuning in). It will be interesting to watch his strategies. He's a good guy though I don't know what his "image" will be on the show.

Very cool Paula!
We'll be sure to tune in! I've often wondered how one puts his or her life 'on hold' to participate in one of these shows.
Best of luck to him!!

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
That's so cool Paula.
I just saw previews for it tonight on television. It seems they are using a new format this season by splitting up the teams by race. They said they did this because people complained that that they did not see enough race diversity. Personally I couldn't understand why they did it that way. Why not just split up the diverse group into teams, but not segregate them?
I assume ratings, but fear they may accomplish the opposite of what they though was an apeasement.

Wow! I've never missed an episode of Survivor.
Is this the same BIL with the American Idol connection?

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
Yup, same one. It's actually his wife that got us the tickets to AI because she's in the "business", too. Fun family for sure! Jonathan is one of the older contestants -- 44 years old.

...Great news, Paula! I never watched it again after the first season, but WILL tune in for this! I agree about the segregated teams...what is the purpose of that?

It will be fun to see him this fall. I enjoy watching when I am home in the evenings. Good luck to him..

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
I saw this mentioned on TV last night. A big controversy about the racially sorted teams is brewing. Lots of yelling, so I turned it quickly to another channel. I'll be watching in the fall, hope there's not too much yelling. Good luck to him.

Good Luck to your BIL, Paula. I love Survivor! My favorite year was the 2nd one, the one with "Kentucky Joe" as they called him.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
Ooow, maybe we need a Gay versus Straight Survivor!
I know who will be better housed that's for sure.
Straight Team:
"Right guys, let's just stack up these logs to make a military style lean to, it won't keep the rain out but it'll be quick and we can get back to the babes."
Gay Team:
"Ramon, Peter, and Steven, I want you guys to gather palm fronds and tropical foliage, go for the chartreuse toned leaves-we're going for a Gilligan's Island meets mid-century modern aesthetic here, ok? What does everyone think about a vanishing edge reflecting pool entrance feature with cascading coconut fountain?

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
I have never watched the show..I hate commercials!!!! Hate Them!! I will try to watch this show though. I heard on the radio yesterday that they were going to split the teams up by race. I heard that Trump wanted to do this on the Apprentice...Black vs. White, but there was such a huge outcry that the idea was nixed. Perhaps this will happen with the Survivor show.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
Yes, it will be interesting to see what happens with the teams grouped by race... controversial for sure. I only watched part of the first season and I haven't watched it since then. But I'll be a loyal viewer this season for sure. I can't wait to see how he plays out his role on the show. He and his family have been to SoWal at our cottages 2-3 times with us in the past few years (and went to Kimmifunn's bonfire on the beach one New Years for a little while). Those are his kids with our kids at Grayton Beach a few years ago in my avatar.
Thanks for all your good wishes as I live vicariously through my brother-in-law's exciting life! (But, frankly, I'm very happy floating peacefully on my floater in the pool with a good paperback book in one hand and a cool drink in the other...)
Thanks for the link to the bio, InletBeachDweller.Last edited by Paula; 08-24-2006 at 10:36 PM.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
We're excited that it's only a few days until Survivor is on, so I'm reminding SoWallers to watch. Drats because I have to go to a middle school parents-teacher night the first night (this Thursday) but we'll tape it (so you all will know what happens on the first night before I do).
Yes, Tootsie, Uncle Jon (as he is known around our house) is a cutie (he does have nice eyes) and he's a good guy. Can't wait to see how he plays out his role and how he gets portrayed... Will he be a good guy or a bad guy on the show? We just don't know...Paula

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
Mermaid, you and Merman met Jon last New Years vacation on Grayton Beach when Kimmifunn had the bonfire. We only stayed for a little while, but we saw you, Donna and husband, the Funns, Kurt (I don't know if Tootsie was there -- I didn't know Tootsie then) and a few others.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
It's cool up here in Michigan. 50s at night and high 60s during the day -- a bit unseasonably cool. Feels like an early fall, though it should warm up to 70s during the day soon.
When we're in SoWal with family, we usually don't get out much or stay places long because we don't see each other often so we typically spend mosts of our time holed up together catching up on the cottage porch, beach, restaurants. Especially with kids, it takes a long time to get ourselves organized to get out when we're coordinating multiple families. I usually get out more when I'm there on my own and am just coordinating myself which is pretty simple.Paula

Fantastic! A new sowaller (kinda) to watch on TV. Be sure to start a thread before it starts with times of weekly shows etc for airheads like me so I can be sure to see it!

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
Oh no!
The other survivor contestants don't trust Uncle Jon, especially since he left his team and joined another one. I don't know what to make of this, though he's a lovely human being and fully trustworthy in the family! He almost got voted off last night. Well, at least he's a central character, which is good and makes for funn family conversation. We'll see what happens over the next few weeks. He's hanging by a thread according to the other contestants. Unfortunately, I'll be at parent teacher conferences next Thursday so we'll have to tape it.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
I enjoyed watching last night, and it seems that the producers want to make him look untrustworthy. They do not show any good comments. Always thought it would be great to be on an island like that, but the personalities of the of the participants make it seem undesirable. Really ugly things are said and why must that be? Hope he contiues to hang in there....maybe next week will be an individual challenge that he can win.
People will forget what you said.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
I thought he was a goner last night for sure. It's not good to leave your team like that but in a way I see why he did it. He felt like he had a strong bond with Candace and it was a split second decision. The other thing that's not working for him right now is Candace told Adam that Jonathon was the one that wanted him sent to Exile Island. He should take it as a compliment but Adam just wants to kick his butt. Hopefully Jonathon makes it to the merge and then he can strive for individual immunity. He has definetly been a central character this season. It's been funn to watch.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
Yup, I thought he was a goner as well. I thought it was interesting that he thought he had a bond with Candace, but she told someone from the other tribe that she didn't have any bond with him. But Candace and Jon and a few others are friends now that the show is over and they stay in touch. We're going to the Survivor finale (all contestants got tickets for families/friends) in Los Angeles the weekend before Christmas (when the winner is chosen from the last two survivors), so that will be a lot of funn.

Re: Survivor-My Brother-In-Law is a Contestant!
We're pretty excited about going to the finale. I have to figure out what to wear. I was hoping to just wear jeans, sandels and a black or white shirt (since it's supposed to be Survivor) but my sister-in-law (Jon's wife) said it's a little dressier than that. I'll see what I can do.
