Our high school senior has orientation on Thursday the 10th and our college sophomore doesn't go back 'til the end of the month. Why is it that the greater the tuition you pay, the less time the kid actually spends in school?

New school year just around the corner

Just 71 days after the last bell rang on the 2005-2006 Walton County school year, teachers and administrators will be welcoming students back to the classroom Aug 4.
Bay Elementary, tucked away in the woods of Point Washington, will be introducing its new role as a K-5 school to help accommodate the area’s growing population.
“We are extremely excited,” said Dr. Gail Pettus, Bay’s principal.
As the oldest school in South Walton, Bay’s role had been reduced to K-1. But the school board agreed last year to expand the grades serviced to help alleviate the over-crowding at nearby Butler Elementary. A new roof and an extended administration area were installed at Bay over the summer, and Pettus said they were trying to “tie up all the loose ends” last week.
“We have 250 students enrolled this year,” Pettus said, “so we’re at capacity.”
Bay had to hire an additional 15 teachers to meet state studentto-teacher ratio requirements. Enrollment is up all over Walton County, although official student numbers will not be available until next month.
In preparation, shoppers have been flooding area clothing and office supply stores, taking advantage of a back-to-school tax break that runs until the end of the month. The Old Navy in Destin was packed last Saturday, and a manager said typical backto-school items, such as shorts, denims, khakis, polo shirts, graphic tees, book bags and lunch boxes were being restocked every day.
With the exception of the Seaside Neighborhood School, neither Okaloosa nor Walton counties have implemented uniform policies, although standards of dress are strictly enforced.
Charlie Marello, dean of students at Freeport High, said dress is a concern but often not a problem.
“Students and parents generally know what can be problematic attire,” Marello said, as he searched the dress code for the red flags. “It’s hats and short dresses that tend to cross the line.”
With 31 days of scattered breaks, Walton County’s 2006-2007 school year will conclude May 23, 2007 for students and May 25, 2007 for teachers.

Wow, we start back August 24 and I still think it's too soon! I love having the kids home in the summer. Not looking forward to the hectic schedules and homework.

Gwinnett right? In Barrow where I live with my parents, they start on August 3rd. Rockdale County, GA went back today! First-year orientation for me is Monday August 14th and classes begin on Tuesday the 15th. I am extremely nervous and excited! I am dreading the first time one of my professors calls me out and then chews me up and spits me out like raw hamburger meat.

The County Schools start here August 7th, the Memphis City Schools start August 14th. They stagger them here. Do any of the above school systems stagger their start dates between the county and the city schools??? Just curious.

Most of the school districts in Georgia are consolidated and are governed by the individual counties. The only exception seems to fall within the larger city areas such as, Atlanta, Gainesville, Rome, Savannah, Columbus and Macon which all have city school systems apart from the county systems. There are also a few smaller cities dotting the Georgia landscape here and there which do have separate systems than their counties, like Buford in Gwinnett County. Gwinnett County is the State's largest school system, and I believe it is the State's largest employer . The times seem to be about consistent among the county and the cities within these counties which have their own systems. However, lately there seems to be a drastic difference between the start times of each metro county (Rockdale County started today, neighboring Gwinnett County starts on the 14th as GTTBM told us) and this is most likely a result of construction and renovation projects taking place within these counties.

Aug. 3 here in Hillsborough County. In Florida, it's all about getting ready for the FCAT (standardized test). That's why they start so early. Plus it's not like any locals are enjoying the beach.

Yeah, the schools are starting early here. We wouldn't come during spring break. 4th of July week that year was packed enough with college kids. But does the Sowal area really get alot of spring breakers compared to places like Panama City Beach??? Well, if it is any consolation we are not going to get to come this year either. No beach, makes me very sad! We have opted for a 3 night stay at a nearby state park in a cabin at the end of September. I hope it is cool there as I love cool nights. Won't be as nice as the beach, but will be nice!
