    Vacuum Cleaners...

I am not sure if this is the place to post this so Kurt, please let me know if needs to go somewhere else. Thanks!

I am going shopping for a new vacuum cleaner this weekend and wanted to get some opinions because I don't even know where to start. Obviously I do not want to spend $400 for a Dyson, but would still like a good quality vacuum. I just moved into a new house with carpet and tile floors. Mostly tile, with carpet in the bedrooms. I just wanted to get some opinions on which vacuums you like/dislike and why. Thanks!

You can't go wrong with the Dyson. They are worth the $$ and are durable.

If I ever win the lottery....a dyson is the first thing I'm going to buy.

My husband is sold on Oreck's, we have had our for about 5 years and it does a good job going from surface to surface. But I told him if he chooses the vacuum, he has to be the one to use it

Dyson. Seriously, you will not regret it, they really are worth the hype. I was lucky enough to be given one as a gift a few years ago, and it is far and away the best vacuum I've ever used, period. I have a dog and a cat (or two ;) and I'm pretty sure I would've ripped the carpet out with my bare hands by now if not for the Dyson. I would set up a shrine to it if I had the space.

We have an Oreck at the beach house and love it. It works well, and is SO light. Love that!

The cleaning service in GA tore up our Royal (they don't check the bags, don't check the belts, etc.), so we decided to buy another Oreck. The XL Silver is $429.95. Yikes! But the Oreck store had the Collegiate Series version on sale for $199.95. We bought a Gator one. Amazon.com: Oreck XL Collegiate Series Vacuum Cleaner - University of Florida: Kitchen & Dining@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21-e2EuRVnL.@@AMEPARAM@@21-e2EuRVnL

While we were at the Oreck store, we saw Oreck Cleaning Supplies - Carpet and Upholstery | Oreck professional dry carpet cleaner cleans carpets, upholstery and removes allergens, odor and dirt. Try now with risk free trial. - Oreck -- OMG, a dry carpet-cleaning product called Capture developed by my husband! We have always cleaned our carpet with that product. But I've had to get down on my hands and knees with a brush to rub it in. Oreck now has a product to brush the powder in, so no need to get down on my knees. Oreck Floor Care Machines | The Oreck Ultra Orbiter cleans carpets and hardwood & tile floors. Clean, Polish and Buff. - Oreck It was $399.95, but it paid for itself in its first use last week when we cleaned our carpet in GA and FL. Our 1988 carpet in GA looks new, and the carpet in FL after years of rentals looks new. Awesome! It takes very little time to clean the carpet this way, and it is superior because it doesn't leave the soapy residue that wet carpet cleaning does which causes your carpet to attract dirt and get dirty again faster.

We love our Miele, but spent as much on it as you would a Dyson.

Our previous vacuum was a mid-level Sears model that was perfectly servicable for carpet & tile, but the mister wanted to get a new one when we remodeled, and since he's the one in charge of that household chore, he got to pick what he wanted.

If you go with a Ball make sure you don't accidentally get the light duty one. They just came out with a version for all floors.

If you don't have animals, stay away from the "Animal" versions. They charge you a lot of $$ for a powered attachment for the hose that runs a beater bar off of the suction.

The DC17 and DC33 will suck the most for the money!

HAHA! Its funny that you say that Will B. We borrowed my inlaws' vacuum the other day and when we took it back I said "Your vacuum sucks!!!!" And they looked at me like I was crazy and then I said, no it literally sucks! :)

    Which model do you have?

I abhor having to shop/replace things like vacuums, coffee makers, appliances, cars... but I gotta say those Dyson commercials really have me intrigued. And yes... the Ball DOES look cool. I'm convinced I could vacuum the house w/ all the agile flair of 'Mrs. Doubtfire' if I only had a Dyson Ball!!!!

I have a Dyson, a Hoover and a Rainbow and honestly they are ok, but I am not crazy about any of them.

The Dyson is great for floor and carpets. The Hoover is very lightweight and great for quick pickups, the Rainbow is the best at deep cleaning but a pain in the butt to use.

None of them are great for wand use.

We've had an Oreck for 18 years and it has cost us nothing in repairs, just the normal bag and belt replacement. I just replace the agitator bar about once every 3-4 years. There's a store in PCB. I wouldn't have any other brand!

I have all hardwood floors and just a few area rugs. I have had a mighty mite for 20 years and it's my favorite appliance. Still has the same suction. light and portable, easy to store. I'd have a cow if something happened to it.

From what I can see from the commercials the Dyson ball doesn't look like it could go under furniture/couch. Is that a problem?

I wonder about that too... I DO like having an optional hose/wand attachment.

I have a Roomba robotic vacuum and it absolutely rocks. Nothing beats pressing a button when I leave for work in the morning and coming home to a clean house with no effort on my part! :)

I had a dyson and returned it when I couldn't get in close to furniture or even in the toekick area on the bottom of my kichen cabinets. It's not just the ball but the front of it was just too tall to get under the front edge of the cabinet.

I don't have the ball, so I can't vouch for that one... Mine is a Dyson DC 07 All Floors model. It is an upright with a canister, HEPA filtration, wand and a few attachments. The wand & extension hose reach all the way to the top of my stairs when the vacuum is at the bottom, which makes it much easier. It's easy to take apart and clean, and all of the parts are clearly labeled. My parents have the same model and my sister-in-law has one too, and we all rave about it.

I have the Dyson Animal - don't know the number - purple ball and it is awesome - yes, it does really suck!!! You can find them sometimes - a refurb - on Overstock.com. Can you use that 20% coupon on a Dyson from B, B and B?

I got my Roomba from B, B and B - and with two cats and one dog - it is priceless! My floors downstairs are hardwood - don't know how well it will work on carpet - but it certainly helps with the fur!

I love to be vacuuming, washing dishes and washing clothes all while on the porch. I need something to fold and iron the clothes while on the porch now!

My vacuum doesn't blow but it SUCKs great! I have a Kirby and I love it! There IS a story here though. I never in my life would have though I would pay so much for a vacuum cleaner. I don't remember exactly how much the Kirby cost us, but as I recall it was almost as much as our house payment at the time. I know for a fact we actually financed the sucker! Mind you, we did not go out shopping for a vacuum and we were not even thinking about buying a vacuum at the time. We already had a vacuum cleaner, it didn't suck very good but I was happy enough. Connor was very young and I think Cameron was on the way when "ding dong".....yep! The door to door vacuum cleaner guy shows up at our door and would like us to take a look at his fabulous vacuum that he has for sale. I am already saying thank you but we are not interested when Chris invites the guy in for a demonstration! All I can say is that guy put on a great show! He sucked up a bucket of sand from our carpet along with god knows what else (we had a sand box at the time that we couldn't keep Connor out of! He loved that sand box and had a million and one trucks and hot wheels in that thing!) As soon as I saw all the dirt and sand that the Kirby sucked up out of my carpet, which I thought was pristine and clean, (heck I had just vacuumed with my non-sucker vacuum that very morning!)....I was sold! The only problem was that we couldn't afford the darn thing. That's when the guy really put on a show! The finance thing went through and bam!! I had a Kirby with every attachment, carpet cleaning device, hardwood flooring cleaning device etc.,etc. It was crazy at the time, but I LOVE my Kirby and it is the very best sucker in my book! And it should be for the price. Some of my friends do swear by their Dyson's though.

Love the Oreck. My mother used it when I was a child, and I bought one when I got married. Very light and great cleaning. We have had ours for 20+ years, and it still works great!

Okay, so which vacuum cleaner holds up to a cleaning service? Our cleaning service has torn up both our Oreck and our expensive Royal. We are currently vacuum-cleaner-less.

Hubby went to HH Gregg and bought a Dyson without the ball and an Electrolux. If we were doing the vacuuming, we'd spend more money. But I am more concerned about the longevity of our vacuum cleaners. There's just two of us living here, we have a poodle who doesn't shed, so basically we just need two vacuum cleaners (one for downstairs and one for upstairs so they won't bang up the paint in the stairwell) that can fluff up the carpet and can withstand abuse.

Ok, so I guess I'm the only one of just two negative reviews about the Dyson.... we bit the bullet and got one from Lowe's. Upright, not the ball one, just regular- and I am stunned that I do not read more reviews complaining about how TIGHT and difficult it is to use the hose!!! I mean, it feels like it is 'magnetized' to pull itself back together, so when you try to stretch the hose out, there's always a pull back, and it's extremely annoying. No, it's not annoying, it's UNUSEABLE. Again, I am stunned that such a flaw could go unnoticed? Maybe I got a flawed unit. I think we did, as the other problem was when you would take it out of it's upright position, and the motor would kick in, much of the time it would make this LOUD obnoxious noise, as if something was grinding against the spinning of the brush mechanism. Between those two problems, we took it back. Granted, when it wasn't doing that, it did 'suck' very well. I kept hoping that with time the hose would weaken it's stubborn pull, but it did not get better. Still looking for another vacuum....

Before we got Fraulein Miele, we had a $150 Sears-Kenmore model that seemed to do a very good job as long as you changed the belt about every 3 years. It still worked well when we got rid of it, but the spousal unit was offering to take over all vacuuming responsibility in the house after we tore out the carpet if we got him a canister vac, and the Miele was the canister vac he wanted.
