Birmingham Meditation Teacher speaks Oct. 21

Janet Bronstein, a senior teacher at the Birmingham Shambhala Meditation Center, will be guest speaker at the Emerald Coast Meditation Society on Oct. 21, talking about “Riding the Energy of Emotions in Meditation Practice.” The location is 480 N. Co. Hwy. 393, Santa Rosa Beach, one-half mile north of Hwy. 98.

The meeting will start with a 30-minute meditation at 6:30 p.m..

Bronstein has been a meditation instructor and teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition since the early 1980s. She served as director of the Birmingham Shambhala Center 2006-2009, and has attended and staffed several international meditation programs. She is also on the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she teaches ethics in the School of Public Health.

Bronstein’s talk will focus on how emotions can dominate us in obvious and subtle ways. “They sometimes feel like alien forces that take us over and cause us to think and do things that we find surprising,” she says. “Mindfulness meditation works with the energy of emotions directly, without suppressing feelings or acting them out. By taking a simple, neutral, straightforward approach, we create the space that allows us to experience emotions as channels of communication with the world.”

Following the talk and discussion, the evening concludes with a short guided meditation about 8:15 p.m.. Meditators of all varieties are welcome.
