It's National Walk to Work Day!
National Walk to Work Day
When : First Friday in April
U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson declared the first National Walk to Work Day as April 2, 2004. With obesity and sedentary lifestyles growing at an alarming rate, National Walk to Work Day was initiated to draw attention to the need to get out and exercise, and to get in shape.
On this day, Americans are encouraged to walk to work. If you can't walk to work, walking during lunch time, or another time of the day. The goal is to walk 30 minutes a day. Health officials are hoping this will encourage people to add a 30 minute walk to their daily lives. Health officials, medical agencies, and medical organizations around the country state that a 30 minute walk will significantly improve you health. The benefits are many, including lower weight, less chance of heart disease, less risk of diabetes, and much more. This translates to a longer and healthier life.
Unmentioned in other articles, is the emotional and mental benefits of walking. Walking is relaxing and peaceful. If you walk in a park, or along a waterfront, it can be captivating. Need a quick picker upper? Take a walk today.
Note: Walking is free of charge. And, as of this writing there is no tax on walking, either.
So, if you can't walk to work today, walk 30 minutes at a convenient time. Then, make it a apart of your daily life
If I was gonna do this, I should have started about 5 hours ago.

I walked Sweet Pea! And, since it is threatening rain, I am driving my Ho several miles the rest of the day

Will walk to the store tomorrow, however!Helping others is a gift.

I walked today, and yesterday. I like to start off the day celebrating something I didn't know I was celebrating.

...DD would be very disappointed if there was no tangent! And, yes...the tie-in was perfect.
I loved seeing you in your serious suit!
My boys really enjoyed meeting you!
Oh, we had a marvelous day! I adore walking cities and DC is one of the best! Museum was jsut amazing. Dept. of Treasury sighting was a bit disappointing, as I was expecting a line for bailout cash. No deal. Walked around the Tidal Basin and saw some blossoms! The weather really cooperated that day!
Hope your weekend was great!
...now that is a tangent!

I walk to work every morning. I have to walk from our upstairs bathroom to my basement bathroom then back to the upstairs office for work. Then I have to walk to lunch. Downstairs to the kitchen. Do I get extra points for stairs?????

I would LOVE to live where I could walk to work or take the train. Maybe someday I'll move back to Fort Worth and live downtown....

MK: I must have missed your DC trip blog! where the hail is it? I can't wait to go again (its been many years) and take the little one and walk all day exploring the gorgeous outdoors and inside museums!
okay, DD - I'll go for a walk around the hood. I was thinking about it, then saw this thread and now I gotta.

Roll out of bed, maybe put on shorts, walk downstairs, and across the living room to the couch. It's a real commute, just the other day there was a jack knifed cat on the stairs causing a major back up. There have also been laundry spills, hair balls, and other hazards. Stay safe people!

Essentially the same as National Be Late For Work Day.
-
Curious, how many Sowallers (who don't work at home) actually live close enough to work to walk?
-
-
Sure, it's a curiosity ? not too strict of criteria.
One thing I wondered about when gas prices were skyrocketing as most people HAVE to use a car to get to their remote workplace was if it would make people more amenable to the New Urbanist neighborhood models.

DD et al: did you know that this weekend is National Alcohol Free Weekend? Just thought you may be interested.
-
The puck it is! No way it's an alcohol free weekend when it's SWGB's birthday weekend!
Unless you left out an "is" then we should go see who is celebrating that holiday!

We have been interested in live/works for 5-7 years and searched for a TND where we could live in one for about two years before we made the move. It is a dream come true, and I get in my car much less than I used to. As a matter of fact, before I posted a minute ago, I had just walked back from the Friday Farmers Market and stopped by a friend's art gallery on the way home. We will be meeting back up in a little bit at the local market (more like the old Fermentation's than Modica). All within walking distance.

It's a great way to live. You get to know people a lot better and it's much healthier for you because of all the walking and less time spent in the car. I am hoping we can get smarter about growth here in Sowal and bring more of it here.
I loved living in the big city for the convenience, variety, and not needing a car, but found I can't live there. I get too nutsy in an urban environment - sort of like caging a wild animal.
