Dumb arse driver o' the day!

There was the typical bunch of creative/highly skilled drivers out and about today:

    1) the guy driving his small daughter around in a non-street legal golf cart on 30-A/the bike path/293
    2) the man who gave me the eat sheet and die look for having the audacity to cross the intersection (when he was at the stop sign w/ the additional sign telling him to yield and w/ an arrow pointing out the crosswalk)
3)the guy who was so confused by the plethora of parking lots in Grayton North that he parked in the middle of the street for over an hour

Then there was the clear, had to look twice to believe it winner:

The lady in the white land cruiser with Tennessee plates eating a bowl of ice cream with a spoon while driving through Seaside.

Obviously I'm not a perfect driver either, but I don't think just ONE hand on the wheel is too much to ask!

welcome to vacation land scooterbug. you know the drill. either stay away from 30A, or be prepared to move like a slug and be extremely defensive in your driving.

be careful everyone. people are on the roads and they left their brains at home.

I remember getting onto the BCC about the hundreds of thousands of dollars that they were spending on those light up flashy street crossings. My logic was if someone could cross a street in Atlanta, certainly they could cross a 30-A. Well after spending more time down there than I have in the last five years, I understand. Vacation and common sense do not seem to go together anymore.

The crosswalk lights are not working at the oyster lake/30 A crossing, not that it would help.

Great observation on the drivers this weekend...I will try to "one up" it with a local driver. Had a white BMW with a Walton Tag parked in the "NO parking, reserved for emergency vehicles" spot at the Dune Allen crossover today. I did notice they had a blue handicap tag displayed. The fine you would pay for parking in a spot reserved for that blue tag... What gives????

The teenager and I did the Hwy 98 thing to Sandestin and Destin several times Friday night and Saturday afternoon...and the only thing worse than a 15-year-old practicing driving in tourist traffic is the 15-year-old sitting in the passenger seat yelling things at people in the other lanes.

My only problem today was a local in a little silver compact driving thru Seagrove doing 20 MPH from 395 to past Eastern Lake where I turned off. I was very nice, held my tongue and didn't honk or put my bumper thru his back window. However, I had fantasies..........

I'd like to know what was spent on those because they worked for only a very short period of time...

Upon further reflection I am happy that the 'ice cream bowl in the left and spoon in the right hand' lady wasn't also on the phone.

I have a strong feeling that the bike rental pickup truck being criticized is the same one annoying me by using their open window/30-A as an ashtray.

So as to avoid censorship. It was the one from Seagrove (nearest Goatfeather's Seafood). Blue truck who's driver has forehead veins to match.

Besides my personal time on 30a, I drive 30a during my 8 hr. shift, 5 days a week, and I can state unequivicaly (sp ? ) that drivers from Tenn. are the WORST !!! Just a casual observation but I see a lot of cars and take note of the state. They must get their licenses on e-bay.

The local guy in the piece of crap pickup (small dark color falling apart) that passes in Seagrove and the no passing lanes on 395. Today you were tailgating a school bus and then blew by a car by the Seagrove Villas. You want to kill yourself, by all means go for it. One less moron for the world. The problem is you are going to take out someone innocent. You do this every morning and I still catch up to at the 395 and 98 light. You are not saving any more time by being a complete idiot. I have reported your truck description and plate number to the Sheriff Office moron.

Mine is the winner. I was first in line at the red light on 395/98 waiting to cross north to take my kids to their last day of school. The light turned green and luckily I hesitate a second while I checked that the cross traffic on 98 had stopped. No surprise, a pickup truck came barreling through the red light, pulling a bobcat on a large trailer. The driver was on a cell phone and was looking out his side window. I don't even think he noticed the light was red. I blared my horn at him, which was quite satisfying.

Which proves the point, NEVER CROSS 98 ON A GREEN LIGHT WITHOUT WATCHING THE CROSS TRAFFIC.

I second that! I have to drive ... through Destin..... and Tennessee drivers, followed closely by Arkansas drivers (not literally; Arkansas drivers sit in the left lane 300 yards behind the next car ahead, so they can looky at buildings), are the worst.

Want to drive a German nuts? Make him drive thru Destin. Well really any European driver. It always amazes me the number of people going 20 under the speed limit in the fast lane. The other day I turned down a road that immediately merges into one lane. The person to my right was supposed to merge and began frantically honking because I was in there way. They never once braked. They finally got over all to get in the left hand turn lane.

I taught my kids to that when the light turns green, count one one-thousand, two, one-thousand... to give yourself time to see all of these ridiculous infractions prior to proceeding through an intersection. Two seconds is no skin of the ole rump and decreases the chance of a crash.

June 9-13 is Distracted Driving Week!!!

Celebrate by NOT talking on your cell phone and paying attention - at any given time 10% of drivers are on the phone and 80% of crashes are caused by inattentive drivers!

No statistics available on the number of crashes/injuries caused by handless driving due to ice cream eating!

Glad it is the last day of school! I almost got creamed by the bus driver that leaves Bay Elem. and cuts thru on School Road. I was heading to the first corner off 395 and luckily I could see the big yellow bus thru the trees and was able to slow and pull over next to a tree as far as I could. The driver never even looked as she rounded the corner. I need to mention the road is very narrow at this curve and there is room for one vehicle at a time. If I was a split second farther up the road it would have been a head on collision! What really irks me is that there are no kids getting dropped off or picked up on this street. The driver is simply cutting through, probably to go to Eden Drive. So people....if you live on Eden Drive and have kids, ask them about the Hummer that almost got creamed at the corner on School Road....then thank GOD that your kids made it home safely.

While driving east on 30A this afternoon, I was treated to the lovely spectacle of a young man from Tennessee changing his clothes while driving. All I could see was a shirt coming off over his head and a new one going on, but judging by the swerving that followed, I'm assuming shorts/pants were also involved. I thought the ice cream was bad... sheesh! Honestly, I was so amazed, I didn't even get angry. I just followed him at a very safe distance, mouth agape, in disbelief. At least he didn't throw his dirty clothes out the window...

I drive fairly regularly through Destin to Fort Walton Beach... the past two trips, I've returned by going through Niceville, taking 20 East to 331 South. Even though it is more mileage, it takes an hour, which is the same amount of time it takes to get through Destin, and the drive is oh so much more pleasant. And because it's not constant stop-and-go, I actually use less gas.

    Got pics?

Seriously though I've watched locals do this, usually on the way from one job to the next. It's better than standing naked at a beach access changing.

Yesterday's winner - the pick-up driving down 30-A with the kid and woman in the back futilely trying to contain a pile of 5-6 fully inflated and unsecured beach rafts/floats!

Thankfully the kid wasn't seriously hurt as they were going much faster when I saw them and thought "This will NOT end well!" It had Darwinism written all it!

From the Sun: Boy in stable condition after falling out of truck
A 13-year-old boy was in stable condition Tuesday night after falling off the tailgate of his father's pick-up truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Trooper Jay Lieb, who worked the incident, said the boy's family was coming back from the beach. He and his mother were sitting in the back of the truck, holding onto some rafts. One started to blow away and the father "jerked the wheel" to help keep them in the truck, Lieb said.
The truck was traveling about 10 mph when the boy lost his balance and fell out. His head struck the pavement and he was flown to a hospital in Pensacola.
The accident happened in a neighborhood just off of Country Road 30A.
"Riding in the back of a pick-up with the tailgate down isn't wise," Lieb said. Charges are not likely to be filed.
"(There were) poor decisions, but nothing illegal," he added.

I don't understand how they were doing nothing illegal - isn't there a "click it or ticket" push going on?

Very true - was so busy watching the dumbfounded expressions on the other drivers' faces I didn't realize he was cleaning up after himself (maybe others too from the # of floats)!

This morning as I headed in to work, there was an SUV from Kentucky in front of me... they had the luggage rack on top and were clearly on vacay... and they saw some people they knew out riding bikes. I was amazed when, instead of simply waving to their friends or pulling over to stop, they actually stopped the car in the middle of the road and their kids got out to hug their friends, etc. I was too stunned to even honk at them! Fortunately, the three or four cars behind me were not...

Yeah, what is the deal with those crosswalks? Run out of money or something. There is a pole with a button on it, but for what? There are no lights hanging nearby. No sign that says it's safe to cross. Nothing. What happens when you push the button?

There are yellow lights embedded into the road that flash. I've seen them working a few times.

I wonder if it has to do with it being "just off County Road 30A?" I know that in Georgia (where it may still be legal to ride in a pickup with no seatbelt--not sure if they changed that yet) persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to ride in the back of a pickup truck.

To the moron in the green sedan that couldn't wait for someone to turn into Angelina's, the bike path is NOT a passing lane. It is also not a white lane for loading/unloading of passengers. I don't really care what your reasons are. Next time there's a tire iron in it for you.

I really hate resurrecting old threads, but we have a new dumb-arse driver award.

Today's prize goes to the lady who flew up behind and blew her horn at a speed-limit obeying car on 30-A by Gulf Place.

The speed-limit obeying car was ShallowsSquirt and his driver's ed instructors...

    Was it a Florida tag?

I've been to Destin and back, twice today......I was doing 5 over the posted speed and cars were flying past me or on my a$$ while not in the passing lane...everyone of them, I am sorry to say, had Florida tags.

I've had my ticket x 2 , thank you very much, and I would like to keep my license so I HAVE to obey the speed limit and someone on my a$$ will not help me go faster....just to opposite.

He didn't say...she got out from behind them when they went one way and she went the other at 393/30A. But I would have liked to have seen the look on his face when the horn blew!

I think most of those Florida tags you see are people from out of state driving rental cars.

Could be...but some wouldn't qualify as a rental car. Is there a car rental agency in Walton Co? Some of the tags read "Walton."
