Historic Point Washington Association meeting - 3/2/08

HISTORIC ASSOCIATION MEETING THIS SUNDAY 3PM

The Historic Point Washington Association will hold its first public meeting
of the year this Sunday March 2, 2008, at 3pm in the screened pavilion
behind the mansion at Eden State Gardens.

Ms. Pat Blackshear, AICP, Director of Planning and Development Services for Walton County, will attend the meeting to answer questions about the county planning department's process as it relates to historic Point Washington.

The meeting is free and open to all. Hope to see you at Eden for this very
important meeting.

wonderful meeting yesterday at eden not to mention a perfectly gorgeous day at the park.

I'm proud to be a member of this group led by President Randy Harelson and other neighborhood officers/members. They have accomplished so much in so little time! here are a few items of interest:

historic pt washington tour - spearheaded last year and enjoyed an outstanding attendance by residence and visitors. will become an annual event.

panhandle historic preservation association - we are part of this association, and a member attended a meeting with a beautiful pt washington display which was the subject of a lot of attention. we have two historic groups representing pt washington: friends of eden, historic pt washington association.

governor stone - kiosks from seaside placed at the end of hwy 395 adjacent to boat ramp to be used for information about hte Governor Stone. The Governor Stone is a historic schooner (built in 1877) in Choctawhatchee Bay, near Freeport, Florida, United States. On December 4, 1991, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. One year later, the schooner was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It became part of Eden Gardens State Park in 2003.

Burleson House - Albert Butler had the house moved from the methodist church land onto his own property further north on why 395. the butlers plan to restore and use this old florida cracker house as a local heritage museum, and possibly use for community meeting space. an application for historic grant for this project has been submitted to the state. this building was saved thanks to Albert!

Bay Elem School - the historic association's efforts regarding the proposed metal building/gymnasium truly made a difference with the location and overall apperance of this structure currently under construction on hwy 395.

Community meetings with county planning department - to be scheduled to resume discussion on neighborhood planning for density, height, parking, etc.

Shallowsnole is secretary of the association and knows more about its mission. hope to hear from you and the association. keep us informed!

thank you randy and everyone for caring about our beautiful community. it is truly a gift to live in such a neighborhood with so many neighbors giving their time and talents to preserve it, and guard its future.

Great report, Toots! Is the description below the house someone was trying to get moved? dd loved that house!

The Governor Stone is a historic schooner (built in 1877) in Choctawhatchee Bay, near Freeport, Florida, United States. On December 4, 1991, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. One year later, the schooner was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It became part of Eden Gardens State Park in 2003.

The Governor Stone was built in Pascagoula, Mississippi, for merchant Charles Anthorn Greiner. It is named for John Marshall Stone, the first Governor of Mississippi elected after the Civil War and Reconstruction, and Greiner's close friend.

Thanks Toots - you just did about half of the minutes for me!

And Kurt is correct - the Burlison house is the one that needed to be moved. Albert Butler's mother lived in the home for many, many years after marrying Roy Burlison. It is my understanding - and I could be wrong - that part of the house once sat on the grounds of what is now Eden, as W.H. & Katie Wesley's daughter, Mabel, was Roy Burlison's first wife.

It is rare that a historical structure has a happy ending, and this one does!

For members of the Historic Point Washington Association who were at the last meeting when Pat Blackshear spoke about the meetings being held by the county providing a potential venue for instituting the growth management and design goals for our neighborhood...

The meeting for the Point Washington area, according to a notice from SWCC,
is being held at the annex on April 29 at 5:00 (6:00 EAR). If anyone has more info to add to this, please do so. The mailing from SWCC designated 5:00 as WS, but I don't know what that means.
