Great Beach Music
I thought I would burn some CDs (legally, from Rhapsody). I want to build up my collection of music to have at the beach.
Your favorites? All kinds!

Re: Great Beach Music
I like Jimmy Buffet too, but man, I had a terrible time at his concert years ago. The Parrotheads were out of control.
People were falling down drunk from tailgate parties in the parking lot, it was Barfarama stepping through there, and by the time the show started the crowd was so obnoxious. The couple next to us hassled each other the whole night, then got taken away by security after the husband began choking the wife.
Of course it wasn't Jimmy's fault!
Favorite beach-type mix:
School's Out for Summer - Alice Cooper
Surf's Up Tonight - Midnight Oil
Vacation - the Go Gos
Fight for Your Right To Party - Beastie Boys
The Roots - The Seed
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Groovin' - The Rascals
Summer Song - Chad and Jeremy
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
Sailing - Christopher Cross
A Pirate Looks At Forty - Jimmy Buffet
We're Going to Be Friends - White Stripes
Riders on the Storm - the Doors

There are some bands like that, that are much better in person than on radio. And the converse is true, too.

Any Jimmy Buffett will do.
If you are just wanting to relax with calm, soothing instrumentals, go to Magnolia House in Grayton and buy any of Nancy Veldman's CD's.

Re: Great Beach Music
Anything by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Also, there is a two-disc CD entitled "Beach Music" that contains tunes from the 60s and we play it constantly when at the beach. It makes the kids stick their fingers down their throats, but we make them go out and sit on the steps at Zoo Gallery waiting for a glimpse of a current rock star.

REM
Bob Marley
Neil Young
Peter Gabriel
Old Crow Medicine Show
Soundtrack to "50 First Dates" (all of the songs, not just on the released CD)

My wife caught most of my beach favorites, but I can add UB40 to the list. ...and she is daring me to add one of my favorites, Tom Waits, who's music goes anywhere.

Re: Great Beach Music
"The Red Walls" are a new, young band. Reminiscent of the Beatles.
The Chemical Brothers
the "Run, Lola, Run" soundtrack.
The Gipsy Kings
All of the above can be found on Rhapsody.

Love most of the usual - Marley - Buffett - but also like Jack Johnson - what beautiful lyrics - he is a surfer dude from Hawaii.
Mahalo Jack - love your music.

Good suggestion! My brother recently gave me one of his CDs. I had never heard of him but instantly got hooked on the music.

"Veedon Fleece" album by Van Morrison.
Must be listened to in its entirety as a single piece of work. If this album doesn't move you, you got a hole in your soul. This is Van at his deepest. Not a beach party album, this one is for times when it's just you and the sea, or maybe just one other special someone along.

Absolute best beach music out and probably my favorite of any kind of music. I keep his CD playing in my jeep constantly. Another really good band if you have not checked them out yet is Wilco.

Re: Great Beach Music
Ya'll have some great suggestions, but my favorite to have on the beach is Country Cutie himself Kenny Chesney
. His last three albums have some great beach songs on it. Especially his latest Old Blue Chair, check him out you won't be dissappointed.

There is an awsome band out of Destin, don't know if they are together anymore, called the Salty Dogs. If you can find their CD it is truly awsome and they are from the area. Similar music as Buffet.

Re: Great Beach Music
I bought the Salty Dogs CD a few years ago at Collaberations (that store that stuff doesn't match the couch) but I noticed it was closed (or closing) this past summer. There is lots of great music, local and otherwise above the Sundog Book Store.

On the reggae tip, don't forget about Toots and the Maytals and Peter Tosh--especially live Tosh, if you can get your hands on it.

Donna the Buffalo (really great, a combination of country/bluegrass/progressive zydeco), Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Vic Chestnutt, Neko Case, Old 97's. There's tons and tons more or this alternative country.

Re: Great Beach Music
Try Buddha Bar. Go on to www.amazon.com and you can listen to cuts. Definitely cool and definitely not what you'd hear here. (Now if you were in Paris, that would be a different story!) It's cool.
Listened to Fabulous Thunderbirds today and they were plenty rowdy and fun!
