Slurp free at 7-Eleven today
July 11, 2007
By Mike Nolan Staff writer
Convenience store chain 7-Eleven plans to hand out nearly 3 million free Slurpees today to celebrate its 80th birthday.
Each year on July 11, the chain hands out free Slurpees to mark 7-Eleven's founding in suburban Dallas in 1927. The company expects to give away close to 3 million drinks in 7.11-ounce cups today.
And when it comes to selling the semi-frozen beverage, Bob Stella is the Chicago area's Slurpee king.
His Park Forest 7-Eleven ices the competition, far outselling any other store in the Chicago area.
Stella's store, 425 Sauk Trail, had held the crown as top Slurpee seller in the United States for a number of years. It's still the leader of the pack out of roughly 220 stores in the Chicago area, said David Wolf, a 7-Eleven field consultant.
Last month, Stella's store averaged nearly 600 Slurpees a day, Wolf said.
Stella opened his store in 1969, three years after 7-Eleven introduced the Slurpee.
"They built a real good relationship with the kids in the area, and now those customers bring their kids to the store," Wolf said.
Recognizing Stella's Slurpee stature, 7-Eleven has outfitted his store with 14 Slurpee machines, each dispensing a different flavor, Wolf said. That's more than any other Chicago-area store, he said.
About 5,800 7-Elevens will take part in today's birthday celebration, offering limited supplies of free Slurpees.
"A lot of people come in on that day just for the free Slurpee," Wolf said.
For true Slurpee fans, their local 7-Eleven "is a destination for them on that day," he said.click >> Filter your water instead of using bottled water << click

Re: Free Slurpies at 7/11 Stores today
Unfortunately, it's all Tom Thumbs in NW Florida, much to my disappointment. For the 7-11 Slurpee is far superior to whatever sort of inferior chipped ice product Tom Thumb tries to pass off as a substitute.
When I visit family in Michigan, I make them stop at 7-11 for a real Slurpee every chance I get.

Nope, only happy kiddo's with me.
Just a little sticker shock.....A little reminiscent of the birth of one kiddo, she weighed 7lbs lloz, we nick named her "big gulp"
Yea, wish I knew. I was worried when I saw no ads or anything. They did kind of laugh, and said I wasn't the first. So there is either another Sowaller in Okc, or the ad was somewhere!
