Hi Bsmart! I love Charleston. It is one of my favorite cities. One thing I hear about Charleston though is if you weren't born there, it's hard to fit in.

Before kids hubby and I loved to visit there. We stayed in a great bed and breakfast and wandered through a bunch of old houses-turned-museums. What an awesome town.

Kind of True. My mom was born there. Very thick Southern - almost English accents - my grandmother sounds like a Brit when she speaks sometimes. The native families stick to their southern roots, like they still have Debutante balls and such, which is something you do not really hear about anywhere else in the South anymore. I love the architecture, climate, and the fact that you can bike and walk most anywhere you need to be.

Yes, they're pretty cliquish, especially the people who live S.O.B. (South of Broad) and are from old Charleston families. My S.O.B. friends pride themselves in the fact that they turned down Ted Turner, as you recall a former America's Cup sailor, for membership because he was "new money." They definitely know how to throw a party. And the coolest thing is after throwing a big dinner party, they don't have to do any cleanup -- there's always someone they know hanging around who needs work and who does all of the cleanup for them.

What I like the best is all of the beautiful, inexpensive, fresh flowers being sold on the street corners. Our friends there always have fresh flowers in every room, especially in the springtime. What a luxury!

    Glad you had fun, bsmart.

    Re: Spring Break = Over

Before moving here, I had narrowed down my list to two places to live, here or the outskirts of Charleston, eg- Sullivan's Island or Isle of Palms. There are enough people in the Charleston area that it really doesn't matter if I don't fit in to the old money of Charleston. Who really cares about doing that? If they are that stuck up, I don't know why anyone would care to seek to be a part of their snooty group.

What I left out was that they turned down Ted Turner for membership in the Carolina Yacht Club because he was new money.

The people I'm talking about are really snobs. One night we were giving one of them an engagement party. They were so snooty that their brother-in-law and we just couldn't stand it anymore. So we started drinking beer and throwing the bottles on the lawn to gross them out. It worked. LOL. We have avoided being around them anymore except at weddings.

You're right, SJ, who wants to be friends with people like that?

It is all relative...the city has changed so much, so it is not hard to fit in and have funn! If you want to belong to the old stuffy society...then you probably won't fit in...but who cares??? Charleston has so much to offer...all you have to do is have the right attitude!!!

Maybe you have to be in that crowd to hear about them, but Debutante Balls are still all over the south east.

We even have them in Tampa. Not my thing, but there's still plenty of that stuff for those interested. Parts of Tampa are sort of "old money" and I find it very interesting since we are relative newcomers, but I had heard that Charleston is the same way to an extreme. So that was my reason for mentioning it.

I love the city though. The only thing I don't like is that the humidity can be even more oppressive than it is in Florida.

My brother is a professor at the Citadel. He lives on James Island and has had a house on Seabrook for many years. It's gorgeous there, but the water is murky and yucky. Can't beat the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

I was an "escort" for a number of different debs at the Holiday Cotillion here in Tuscaloosa. I never understood the premise of young women being "presented." Presented? To what?

Looked to me like it was simply an announcement saying they were old enough to have sex.

And I bagged my share of debs

I think it's sweet to celebrate a young person's maturing in such a nice way. Plus the history behind some of those balls are really kinda interesting even though I 've never been in it.

Did anyone see the show about the kids in public schools in NY city being required to take ballroom dancing. It was great. They loved it and took it seriously. They looked so mature and got so much from it. Schools competed for championship. We had square dancing but I don't remember any ballroom dancing. Teachers and programs make all the difference. Wouldn't it be nice if all kids could get the chance to learn to dance at school? How funn would that be?

    Re: Spring Break = Over

The Cotillion (a.k.a. debutante) Club in our town is controlled by the graduates of one particular public high school. If you don't go to that school and make friends with a certain crowd, you have to spend your high school years sucking up those girls at that high school. Money (old or new) or class has nothing to do with it. Our daughter went to a private school and didn't want to suck up to them just for the sake of being a debutante. So she wasn't invited to be in the club, yet ironically our air conditioner repairman's daughter was (no money and no class -- just good old country folks). Only one girl from the private school was invited -- her mom groomed her starting in the eighth grade for the Cotillion Club and for sorority recs. She had an older daughter who was disappointed by not being "In Da Club," so she worked the system. It worked -- not only did her younger daughter get invited to be a deb, but she got into the best sorority at 'Bama.

No way I'd suck up to people like that. I could care less about these things. They really don't matter after your freshman or sophomore year.

I was invited to one in Bham. Beaux Arts or something like that. Ritzy affair at the Bham Country Club. It was horrific.

I ended up leaving my date and going to Sammy's.

Not strictly a Southern thing! Philippa did it too. And looked so heavenly beautiful that it still gives me pause. I am a bad mother, though. I could never get the hang of a fox trot. I stepped over many, many toes.

Bsmart, Charleston is one of our favorite cities of all time. If you ever want to see photos, I have a stack, gathered over the years, that measures more than 4" high. Funny thing is that every now and then I take the stack out and look and I still love Charleston.

Her momma made it. I'm sure they had plenty of flags around the house. That big ol' boy in the shiny blue vest would have looked real nice wearing a vest made out of a rebel flag too.

Yeeehaaaw! Is that a black and red butterfly paint on tattoo to match? I think blue vest boy is really wanting to be with Kimmifunn. His colors are a dead giveaway.
