    movie reviews by the gimp

okay, mom and I watched a ton of movies over the last few weeks. she left yesterday, hitched a ride back to Bham with Beachbummett and Flyforfun (thank you so much cuz's).

anyway, just wanted to give a report on some of these. if anyone has any "must see" movies, holler 'em out here!

Family Stone - we watched this one over and over. now on my top ten of all time. Diane Keaton - one of my all time faves.

Nanny McPhee - enjoyed this one though mainly for kiddies. love Emma Thompson.

Finding Neverland - Kate Winslet and my fave Johnny Depp. Kinda slow, but good story.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest - enjoyed this, but not nearly as much as the first.

Little Miss Sunshine - watched this with mango - kinda slow in the beginning, this was a surprisingly hilarious movie - dysfunctional family meets little girl beauty pageant.

You, Me and Dupree - kate hudson, owen wilson, matt dillon, michael douglas. very poor movie in almost every way, IMO, especially given the wonderful actors (I like them all).

Mr and Mrs Smith - this was visually attractive (brad and angelina), stunning, and exciting. the story wasn't that great, but enjoyed it overall. won't be watching it over and over though.

Peter Pan - the live action movie. watched this with spidey and it was really good and very scarey! loved captain hook! no johnny depp here.

Wedding Crashers - I had seen this one before and enjoyed it. my mother couldn't believe some of the crude scenes. but we definitely laughed our butts off at Will Ferrell (small role).

that's about it, or what I can remember...

No, but I listened to Maggie's interview on "Fresh Air" today. Might be fun to check it out before the movie arrives.

I really like your mindless comedy choices.
Dazed and Confused is basically my high school existance back in the 70's.
I liked Little Miss Sunshine, too. Saw this in the theaters but recommend as rental: Howl's Moving Castle (anime, for both adults and kids)

Some other movies I've recently rented:

Russian Dolls (the kids from L'Auberge Espanole grow up)

Kinky Boots (simultaneously hilarious and poignant, based on true story--highly recommended)

Jackass 2 (incredibly crude, incredibly funny)

Devil Wears Prada (occasional weak dialogue but loved Meryl Streep)

In theater: Children of Men--very cool production design, superb acting

    Go for Romance!

If it keeps raining, and stays cool outside, you have to watch "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". You'll laugh and end up using half a box of Kleenex. (One of my all time favorite movies)

Here are four I bought as a boxed set of Romance:

    Chocolat
    Like Water for Chocolate
    Il Postino
    Amelie

Word of caution: if you watch Lake House, have the other half of that box of Kleenex nearby- LOVED THAT MOVIE. I want to find the original. Based on/remake of - a Korean Fantasy/Love story.

I'm not sure if I'm a hopeless Romantic, or just hopeless.

If you're reeaally off your feet and have time on your hands, find "The Women" with Joan Crawford. Get out your brightest red nail polish and enjoy 3 hours of side splitting, "back stabbing" catty humor of a bunch of women going to Reno for quickie divorces back in the day. 100% female cast. Black & white with a 15 minutes full color Fashion Show right in the middle of the movie. Too funny. Lots of great lines and quotes in this movie. My favorites - "Honey, the grass don't grow where she spits!" and the phrase "Jungle Red!"

Absorbing, well-acted Dickensian soap opera: Bleak House

Irreverent story about lobbying for Big Tobacco: Thank You For Smoking

One of my favorite foreign films ever, an engrossing tale of petty court intrigues.
The hero, a country nobleman, gets nowhere in his appeals to get funds for draining the disease laden swamps of his homeland until he learns the art of witty insults. Ridicule

Basically my favorite film of all time, a fish-out-of-water story about Big Oil wanting to buy a small coastal Scottish village. Lots of quirky characters, excellent Mark Knopfler soundtrack and incredible scenic beauty: Local Hero

okay, I'm making a list of all these wonderful suggestions! thank you! I've seen some of these but not many.

I forgot to add one to the list of movies we watched:

Devil Wears Prada. we enjoyed this very much and I want a BF purse and a BF coat so I can throw them at kurt whenever I come home. it's just such a wonderful, dramatic gesture!!! Meryl Streep is so great.

We watched Jackass 2 recently. It was funny & gross. But you must be forewarned, we had to shield our eyes several times and even FF thru a few scenes. And we have a high tolerance for crass subject matter!!

Re: movie reviews by the gimp

This morning I turned on HBO and was so entertained by:

Cry Baby - 1990 film with Johnny Depp

I had seen this years ago and completely forgotten about it! Loved every second!!!

    info from wikipedia:
Cry-Baby is a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_film"]musical[/ame] from 1990 directed by John Waters. It stars [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Depp"]Johnny Depp[/ame] as 1950s teen rebel Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, and also features a bizarre cast that includes rock star [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iggy_Pop"]Iggy Pop[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traci_Lords"]Traci Lords[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricki_Lake"]Ricki Lake[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Nelson"]David Nelson[/ame] and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patty_Hearst"]Patty Hearst[/ame]. The film failed at the box office upon its first release, but has subsequently become a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_movie"]cult movie[/ame].
The film is a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parody"]parody[/ame] of teen musicals such as Grease, of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley"]Elvis Presley[/ame] movies, and of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950s"]1950s[/ame] '[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juvenile_delinquent"]juvenile delinquent[/ame]' movies. It centers on a group of delinquents named the Drapes and their interaction with the rest of the town and its other subculture, the Squares, in 1950s [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore"]Baltimore[/ame]. "Cry-Baby" Walker, a Drape, and Allison, a Square, create upheaval and turmoil in their town by breaking the subculture taboos and falling in love. Part of the film takes place at the now-closed Enchanted Forest[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amusement_park"]amusement park[/ame] in Ellicott City, Maryland.

I've never seen the movie Cry Baby, but you just described the Movie Hairspray nearly to a T. Are they that much alike? What am I missing here?

Lemme see, John Waters film; Baltimore, Ricki Lake, Amusement Park, Forbidden love....Hmmm yep, sounds like same movie. I gotta see Cry Baby.

I must confess, I've not seen the other other John Waters films such as Pink Flamingos and Lust in the Dust. I got me some rentin' to do!

If you want mindless fun, we really liked Superstar with the Sat. Night Live comedian who plays Mary Catherine Gallaher -- Most fun for Catholic girls to watch.

We also liked Tallahega (sp?) nights with Will Farell.

    Dodge Ball was great, too.

All of the above are really mindless fun and offer some belly-laughs.

If you want to bring out the old country Italian in you, I love "The Night of the Shooting Stars" (WW2 in Tuscany seen through the eyes of a 6 year old girl) and "Cinema Paradiso" (best ending in a movie, EVER) . But you'll need to have the energy to read the subtitles.

Other good movies -- "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Monsoon Wedding" (wedding story in India).

Talladega Nights is great mindless fun! Those 2 little boys, Walker and Texas Ranger, have some of the best lines in the whole movie!!

I have not seen The Color Purple, but have seen

Toots! Wasn't it from the book "The Color Purple" the line about learning to drink your coffee black, for their will be days you won't have cream and sugar? Or is that from Last Living Confederate Widow Tells All? I can't remember which, but that one simple line taught me a lot about life.

OK, one toooo many margaritas and I'm getting sappy. Time for bed!

Also, I just watched the Break Up today. Man, that was hard to watch . Hit tooo close to home. Good movie though.

I wasn't sure if I liked this movie or not. it was kind of uncomfortable to watch. But I did like the ending. It's okay to break up, and life does go on. Vince was such a convincing character, wasn't he?

Zoolander is definitely hysterical! There is one sex scene that is definitely not kid-friendly. You can be assured if you're watching it with kids -- even teenagers -- you'll want that scene to end quickly (and it does). So now, Tootsie, that may make the movie even more tempting!

Went to dinner with friends tonight and we go to talking about
    Fried Green Tomatoes.

You should try the BBQ. It's delicious, and really, really fresh! It's a secret recipe though! Very Rare ingredient.

I go on these binges where I have to watch that, Terms of Endearment, Steel Magnolia, Beaches, Cemetary Club...
