But while we are on the subject, Smiling Joe has authorized me to pay forward the dog crate that his dogs and now mine has outgrown. If you are in need, let me know.

is it the kind for carrying a dog in the car...that is, does it have a handle? or is it the wire crate that collapses, or something like that?just for crating in the house?
I need one for a Jack Russell, so medium size for short car trips.

It is a stay at home crate or back of an SUV crate. It is big and plastic, comes apart in two pieces with a wire door. Probably a 25 pound maximum. Smalls fit in it fine from 7 months to a year, now we can't close the door on it.
Alaqua could maybe use the dog crate if no takers here.

I love this! It reminds me of the Free Store we always patronize when visiting a dear tiny remote town in Colorado. We always have things to donate, and usually pick up something too.

The Free Box in Telluride, CO (it's in the center of town)
Quote:
Visiting friends in Telluride, Colorado this week, I have to go by one of my favorite places in town – the Free Box. You never know what you’ll find – shoes, clothing, sports gear, even a flat screen TV from someone moving out of town and swooped up immediately.
It’s a great way to recycle what you no longer use, or to find something useful. I think every town and neighborhood needs their own version of a Free Box. The Telluride Free Box « Thriftify!
I've taken some things from that freebox in Telluride, and spent half a day on a free sofa next to the box, playing music with other random people.
Along the Appalachian Trail, there are many free "hiker boxes" located in the towns or stores near the trail. You leave something you don't want to carry on your back, and you take something that you might be able to use, including packaged foods. Good stuff.

So, if they can do it in Telluride, why can't we have one in Sowal...a perfect place to exchange all the stuff--much of which is perfectly good--left on the beach.
This makes so much more sense than having the beach police haul it off to the landfill. Who knows, if we got a little creative with it, it might become a real community attraction and lead to all kinds of unforeseen good things.....

I REALLY like this idea!

Maybe in that area where Jambone's take-out is; near the General Store in Grayton,
Does someone manage the ones you all have seen? Who sorts things out, or removes trash that might be left, etc.

Sounds great. We have plenty of childrens toys that we collect on Eastern Lake after Hurricanes, storms and summer. The plastic beach toys just float up to the backyard. You would not believe how much people lose or leave around the Inlet. Im all for doing the "free box" by Seagrove Market. It is a good central location on 30A and it looks like the Viridian Hotel is not in a hurry to be built.
Telluride's is in the middle of a fairly tight town. SoWal would need several spread over the length of 30A.
Maybe just put the box at the Tourist place on the corner of 331 and 98. All the folks heading out of and into town go right past there. On Saturday morning the outfluxers could drop their rafts, tubes and styrofoam coolers and umbrellas. On Saturday night/Sunday morning the influxers could pick them up.

The TDC would be a great location, but the tourists are already waiting in line at 331/98 to leave town, so I'm not sure they would try to stop and drop, then get back in line. Best to get them before they pack the car. Businesses scattered up and down 30A should build their own free boxes and encourage dropping and collecting of the beach crap.

How about the management companies?

and maybe add the Leave No Trace logo to each box. I think the management companies are a great idea. I think this would catch on--and everyone (and our beaches) would win!

I don't think the county wants to open the can of worms. The hassle, mess, responsibility, liability of gathering and distributing stuff from the beach. It would take leadership with a lot of balls to make it happen (and I don't mean beach balls).
However I could see them using a contractor to help. Someone on 331 with plenty of space, and balls, could make a little profit. Are you listening Joe Elmore? All the visitors stopping to get cheap beach items will surely also like chainsaw art.
Joe is also the type of guy to do the "free box". A really neat guy that thinks "outside the box". Stop by and see him sometime. You never know what you might find.
