Description: I made this last night for family night and swooned, it is so good. A wonderful blend of exotic flavors!
|
| Other: |
Ingredients: |
|
Time:
couple of hours including cooking time
Difficulty:
Easy
Serving Size:
N/A
|
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 2 onions, sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 lb ground beef
- 5 teaspoons curry powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons chutney
- 1 tablespoon apricot jam
- 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 4 tablespoons oat bran (I used ground oat meal)
- 1 (14 ounce) can lentils, drained
- 1/2 cup sultana or raisins
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 3 bay leaves
- For rice:
- 2 cups of rice
- ¾ cup raisins, soaked in water for 20 minutes, then drained
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric
- 4 cups hot water
- a dash of salt
- 2 sticks of cinnamon
|
| Instructions: |
- For Bobotie:
- Preheat the over to 350°F.
- Heat the oil in a saucepan and fry the onions and garlic until soft.
- Add the meat and cook until brown, drain if necessary.
- Add the curry, salt, apricot jelly, chutney, Worcestershire sauce, turmeric and vinegar. Mix well.
- Add the lentils, sultanas and oat bran, mix, and allow to simmer for a few minutes. Remove from heat.
- Add one egg to meat, mix well and spoon into a greased over-proof dish. Smooth the tops so it is level.
- Add the other egg, a pinch of turmeric and a pinch of salt to the milk. Mix, and then pour that over the top of the meat.
- Place 3 or 4 bay leaves on top and bake uncovered for about 60 minutes.
- Serve over rice.
- Rice:
- Place all the ingredients, including the raisins in about 4 cups of water, bring to boil, cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Dot the rice with a few blobs of butter and give it a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar
- Can be made in the oven, just put all ingredients in a greased, covered pan and put in the oven with the bobotie. Bake for an hour.

Bobo (like the clown) Tie (a man's tie)
I'll make it for you sometime!
Check with me so I can tell you when the meal does not include shrimp Next Tuesday is Cassoulet (French dish with white beans, shredded duck and sweet sausages in a rich white wine and tomato broth.)

Ali - this recipe looks amazing! I'm excited to try it (sans raisins, for me)
Question...
1. A couple of numbers (18 & 11) are blank... is there an ingredient/direction missing or just inadvertent blanks?
2. Does this "set up" like a breakfast casserole or bread pudding?

This sounds yummy! Always looking for something new to do with ground beef besides the typical fare like burgers and meatballs.

No raisins? Try dried apricots instead.
18 & 11 are just inadvertent blanks
It sets up a bit like a breakfast casserole
