Upscale Shopping Center (Destin)

About three months ago I read in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that the Taubman Group which owns and operates malls across the U.S. Were looking to develop an upscale shopping center in addition to Destin Commons. The article stated that corporate officials were looking to sign on Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and/or Bloomingdale's as anchor tenants for the yet to be named center. Has anyone heard anything about this locally, and where in Destin is it going to be built? Also, how is Destin Commons, is it a fairly busy shopping center?

Re: Upscale Shopping Center (Destin)

Destin Commons' traffic is pretty seasonal, it seems. But the public reports say that they're very satisfied with business there, and I can't remember them losing any fixed tennants since they opened. They're supposed to add more stores sometimes in the future- a line of them sticking out into the current parking lot from where Bogwalk is.

I'm not sure if the new mall refers to that or if it would be in a different location. I'm trying to think of what big parcels of land are left between the bridge and Silver Sands that could support another mall, and there aren't many. Maybe something over by the middle school in relation to the latest version of the Turnberry project (provided the Air Force doesn't figuratively shoot down that project again), or maybe it would be the long rumored redevelopment of Golf Gardens. I think I've seen a planning commission notice sign over by there recently.

They NEED those kind of stores to attract the kind of people that would pay for what some of those stores are selling. But, who goes there to shop anyway? If you want to REALLY shop, you NEED to go to New York!

Amen on NY shopping! I could write a book on shopping and it wore me out.

About Destin Commons, they have the tourist attractions like your Hard Rock Cafe ("cough" big mistake "cough"). But you have other stores like your regular chains locals go to. I feel it's busy all the time. Especially the movie theater.

Only question...would Saks want to come to a town with a "Saks Off 5th Ave." But, Saks is hq'ed in B'ham now they should know the area by now.

Re: Upscale Shopping Center (Destin)

Where exactly is Destin Commons, in relation to 30-A? I looked on their website and NO WHERE is there a street address or directions on how to get there! Seems kind of dumb to me, but there you go.

Going west towards Destin it will right past Sandestin on the right. Before you come to the Super Walmart. You'll see the big shark and the guitar on the right . You can't miss it.

Intersection of US-98 and the Mid Bay Bridge south approach road. Destin Commons is on the NE corner of that intersection, Publix is on the NW corner, Barnes & Noble is SW, and Best Buy/Petsmart is SE.

You mean Needless Mark-up?

Taubman is the development group which built the upscale Cherry Creek mall close to where we live here in Denver. It has served us well of the years.
Of course, now that we are leaving the state, they are finally opening a Nordstrom's there.

It is hard for me to imagine that kind of shopping anywhere on the Panhandle, but I suppose if they build it, people will come.

Personally, I can't see NM in the Panhandle...maybe a Last Call Outlet, but maybe you are right...if they build it?

I rmember Cherry Creek Mall from way back...they used to have a toy store with a ferris wheel on the roof (?) and a place to get delicious hot fudge sundaes. My relatives lived in Aurora and visiting them was always a highlight in my childhood!

That mall in Destin IS OVER Priced and I never found good name brands. Even a few smaller stores a cross the street has High prices for low end stuff. I don't shop in Destin for clothes.

Do you mean Silver Sands?

A couple of good treks each year to the Vanity Fair / Lee outlet in Graceville serves us well. I hear there is more in Foley, but I haven't been there yet.

Did I miss something? I thought you were checking out schools in anticipation of moving into your 2nd home. Or will you put both homes up for sale and see which sells - and that makes your decision for you?

Either way, I hope it all works out for you.

I was kidding! I can sell hands down my house here on Long Isalnd. But if I did move to FL, I would need something bigger than what I have, to fit my NY stuff in it. My place is VERY BRIGHT and different than most places in Sowal, Great to visit but, I would want something different to live in all year round. And I would Never Sell my house On Long Island, It's worth to keep.

Re: Upscale Shopping Center (Destin)

A lot of stores in Silver Sands are pretty seasonal with their pricing. We don't even really bother to shop there in the summer because their prices for everything are higher then. But you can hit some decent to excellent sales in October-November (kind of compensates for the running of sharks and jellyfish that time of year) and then again in winter once the Christmas retail season wraps up.

But then I'm easy to please. Give me $60 leather Coach bags, and I'll be happy.

Maybe you mean the original mall, the one that was torn down in the early 90's? We used to get hot fudge sundaes at the old Woolworth's there.
The ferris wheel toy store does not ring a bell.

I am neither a name-brand person, nor much of a shopper, which is probably just as well for someone moving to Port St Joe.
I will probably depend on the internet/catalogs quite a bit.

Thansk for the update on CC mall. I'm glad I have my memories of the old place!

My daddy (the famous PawPaw) made a comment yesterday about my shopping habits...."when you go into Target, I never know if you will come out...I do know when you go into NM, you'll be out in a flash!!" He's not far off the mark there!

the great thing abouot destin commons vis a vis 30A is that it is close enough to get to, but far enough away that we don't have to look at it or deal with the traffic. that makes it perfect.

Re: Upscale Shopping Center (Destin)

No offense to anyone but we do not go shopping when we are in SoWal even on a rainy day. When we used to stay down in Destin years ago, we did go to the "outlet" but it was less crowded and we never found any deals we could not find at home. Upscale shopping when at the beach to me is imported beer in bottles at the Tom Thumb on 30-A and some fresh seafood at Goatfeather's II in Seagrove.

Besides, getting to Destin anytime during the Spring, Summer, Fall season has alot of traffic and if I want that I can just stay here in Atlanta and drive down GA400 to Lenox Square Mall.

A movie theater closer than Destin for rainy days might be nice but not on 30-A.
