Poor Saudi Arabia.

This article cracks me up. Part of the reason I'm for alternative energy is to deny certain oil producing nations our riches.

The Associated Press: Saudis ask for aid if world cuts dependence on oil

Quote:
Saudi Arabia has led a quiet campaign during these and other negotiations — demanding behind closed doors that oil-producing nations get special financial assistance if a new climate pact calls for substantial reductions in the use of fossil fuels.
That campaign comes despite an International Energy Agency report released this week showing that OPEC revenues would still increase $23 trillion between 2008 and 2030 — a fourfold increase compared to the period from 1985 to 2007 — if countries agree to significantly slash emissions and thereby cut their use of oil. That is the limit most countries agree is needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
The head of the Saudi delegation Mohammad S. Al Sabban dismissed the IEA figures as "biased" and said OPEC's own calculations showed that Saudi Arabia would lose $19 billion a year starting in 2012 under a new climate pact. The region would lose much more, he said.
"We are among the economically vulnerable countries," Al Sabban told The Associated Press on the sidelines of the talks ahead of negotiations in Copenhagen in December for a treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
Cry me a river...

Quit buying their oil. Saudi Arabia doesn't export much else.

Yeah, particularly Saudi Arabia, the only Arab Nation whose borders are 100% closed.

We are all economically vulnerable. I guess try buying gas only from companies who purchase less than 50% of their supply from Saudi.

Hard to do since it all gets mixed in together at the refineries. Thankfully a lot of our oil comes from domestic production or from countries like Canada and Mexico. (I don't mind keeping those two border countries stable with my gas budget.) I would however prefer to not purchase from Mr. Chavez.

Boo-pucking-hoo!

While I'd love people to get their heads out of their arses and severely reduce their consumption of fossil fuels, I don't think the Saudis will be strapped for cash anytime soon.

Worst case scenario is that their revenues don't increase by 23 TRILLION in the next 20 years as predicted.

The technology already exists to end our dependency on the Middle East for oil...

Correct you are Geo! Just not at a low enough cost yet...comparatively. It'll happen. I think we will be much better off then - in many ways!

I think the economies of scale are only one small part of it. I believe the bigger obstacle is the powerful lobby of the megacorporations that represent our energy status quo.

Has anyone seen the documentary, "Who Killed the Electric Car"?

Maybe. But I know for sure that when it becomes more profitable for Exxon to provide alternative energies than it is for them to provide oil gas, & coal, they will make the switch. Profit is the best motivator.
