The truth is probably deep in there somewhere. Rev. Jesse Jackson is involved now, so it should be sorted out soon.

Oh, dear... I guess it's back to no TV/internet for me for a while. Excluding sowal.com, of course...

I can't believe the concept is not understood. Maybe you don't want to understand.
And as far as being sterotyped because of race, I was suspended from school along with a black friend, years ago, because of race, pal. You don't know me but your stereotyping of me is obvious. I always hear people, especially minorities, say we need to 'speak openly' about race. But what they want is for the white man to say, 'we are wrong, we are racist'.
Quit strereotyping me and other people as stereotyping blacks. Don't you see the hypocracy? I do understand their lot in life. It is unfortunate that racism exists or that because of the high ststistical crime rate of blacks that people may think they have a higher propensity to commit criminal acts. But to label white people constantly as racist or stereotypers is doing the exact same thing.

pointing out white racist behavior hurts no one. defending white racist behavior perpetuates our embarrassing history and helps no one. i don't believe whites can fully understand the crap law abiding blacks continue to endure. if you rush to defend the cop in this case, try to remember who was standing in his own house when there was a knock at the door. your lifeguard analogy was weak.

Oh, come on! The guy breaks into his rented home and then thinks the police are being unreasonable looking into a suspected break-in at the residence? I don't buy it - at all.

Oh, I didn't know he was renting. I thought he owned it; that's why I mentioned a few pp back that I would produce the Deed in addition to my DL or Passport coming off an international flight.

Would you really? Would you be able to quickly find and produce your deed? And would that really be necessary?

People seem to be overemphasizing that part about identifying that this was his house. The cop said that the prof came up with ID fairly early on. After that, the cop asked if there were other people in the house (the original 911 call mentioned two guys) The cop was still trying to find out all the facts. Just because the guy is a Harvard professor doesn't mean it wasn't a possible dangerous situation. (domestic violence, ambush, hostage). This is when the prof started to lose his temper and started ranting about racism. From everything that has come out, I can't see anything to suggest there was any rascism in the cop's behavior. The black cop that came in later said he backed the cop and his actions 100%. This is not to say racism shows up in a great many arrests, but this just plain doesn't seem to be one of those cases. I think Gates owes Crowley an apology.

where do you get domestic violence or ambush? somebody venting at the law would preclude any hostage situation. when the professor showed his university id, the cop should have backed up, put 2 and 2 together and moved on. the arrest came about because it declined into a battle of wills and neither side was thinking clearly. surely the cop had been in a tense situation before that night. this would have never happened had gates been white.

I disagree, my friend. There's a reason why there is a password on alarms and if you do not give the right one the police come. They are trained to access the situation at the door. If you seem in duress or nervous, the police are looking for cues. Crowley was probably looking for those cues. They also have them rigged so you can put an extra number in the code in the event someone follows you in your house. Someone may be so scared as to react as Gates did and get defensive. What if he was being bribed or a grandchild was kidnapped?

The next time my house or my neighbors house is broken into, I'm calling a Harvard professor. I know he'll know exactly what to do, and while he is there we discuss all the problems that the white racist cops has caused the intire world. We all know that people of color that break the law............IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT!!!

Dang! It's good to get a little levity into this thread. I thought we were going to group hug and sing Koombaya about 80 posts ago.

Come on Bob, that's not nice. Correct though that pointing out racist behavior hurts no one. But apparently you don't see Gate's racist behavior as racist. Him automatically calling the cop a racist etc. That's okay to you because of past things that have happened to blacks. When will it end?
Btw, my analogy wasn't meant to be strictly applied. It was just something that happened to me within the recent week or so, therefore I mentioned it. You koow, most ppeople I notice like you are married within their race, live in a neighborhood made up basically exclusively of their race, have their kids go to schools with others of their same race, but speak to others about the evil white man and the poor black man. Might make you feel less guilty, I'm not sure.
Again, I was demonstrating that people sterotype, like you are doing to me, the cops and other white people. I am comfortable with myself and my understanding of race, so I can speak openly. I've long resented how 'white people' are labeled so negatively and spoke of so openly as racist at the drop of the hat.
It is shameful how many blacks have been treated through the years. I actuallly was touched most during a Mark Twain documentary that showed how a family of slaves were torn apart, siblings taken from their mothers arms, never to see thier mother or brothers again. It made me cry to watch that.
The lady who made the 911 call has even been labeled as a racist and as someone who stereotyped, when actually, she did not say that the men were black. She had a tearful press conference to clear some things up, but many like you will always think any white cop is racost or profiling who has conflict with a black person.
Maybe you should come to visit some of my friends in the projects when I head back to Louisiana, or one of my ex girl-friends Might make you stereotype a little less. But, I doubt it.

I think this is the silliest thing Barack can continue to be involved. Geez~~~~~~

Agreed. I mean come on....who is going to decide which type of beer they have? Will they have a a whole buffet of beers to choose from? Would that be considered elitist or racist? Why not just have burgers with dijon mustard?

Why has this lady not been invited to have at least a glass of wine? I Hope that the picknic table is not just for good ol' boys.

Commentary: Are conservatives consistent? - CNN.com By Al Vivian
Special to CNN
Editor's Note: Al Vivian is the president and CEO of BASIC Diversity Inc., a 35-year-old consultancy that specializes in diminishing cross-cultural biases. He has worked with clients such as Coca-Cola, Ford, Kroger, McDonald's, the National Security Agency and CNN. He is also an adviser to the U.S. Army for diversity and cultural affairs.
Al Vivian says conservatives should have sided with Henry Louis Gates Jr. against government intrusion.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- As an independent moderate, it never ceases to amaze me how political loyalists contradict themselves and flip-flop on social issues. Both parties regularly engage in this practice; but rarely are they challenged or called out for it.
Let's look at the most recent case, the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. It has been more than three weeks since this incident, which was the first story big enough to knock Michael Jackson's death out of the headlines, while simultaneously sidelining President Obama's health care agenda; all resulting in massive media coverage and even a "Beer Summit."
But within all that time and coverage, there is still one question that is yet to be asked: Why didn't the conservatives support professor Gates?

Absent Sgt. Crowley actually observing the forced entry, and absent a search warrant, the courts have held that a voice on the phone (in this case, not even the voice of the witness to the forcible entry, rather the voice of someone to whom the forcible entry had been reported) is insufficient to violate the homeowner’s Fourth Amendment right to be secure from government intrusion in his home.
