Californians to consider doing away with marriage?

The “Domestic Partnership Initiative” proposes to categorize all unions simply as “domestic partnerships,” while retaining all the rights of marriage for heterosexual couples, and extending them to homosexual couples. According to the initiative’s summary, “Legally speaking, ‘Marriage’ itself would become a social ceremony, recognized by only non-governmental institutions.”

State Attorney General Jerry Brown submitted the official title and summary for the measure on Monday, about one week after opening arguments in lawsuits challenging Proposition 8, California’s true marriage amendment.

Brilliant. Government that doesn't pick favorites. I just can't believe this is coming out of California.

Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not (I think it may not be) but this would be the fairest solution yet. I think eventually we'll get to the point where marriage is open to all, with the caveat of course that religious institutions can choose which couples they bless (as they do now). But seriously, this solution makes as much sense as any out there. We're just talking about civil contracts and, in my opinion, basic civil rights.

I agree. I favor getting government out of our lives as much as possible.

I am sure this is a big surprise.

Honestly, this would free up the issue of marriage and put it back in the spiritual/religious realm where it should have been the whole time. There are religions/churches that will bless all marriages and there are those that won't but it won't be a civil rights issue anymore.
