Digital Film 35mm Negative Scanner

Has anyone ever used one? Do you have any recommendations?

I have a decade or more of negatives that I would like to convert to digital.

My current scanner/printer (HP C5550) does not have that ability. Sharper Image has one that you can 'try' out for 30 days for $14.95, or there are many for sale on ebay.

I was also wondering what type of quality you can get from these scans. 8 x 10 prints? larger?

I was there earlier today & all they had was a full sized printer/scanner that also converts negatives. They told me to look online.

I'm curious to know the quality of the digital image also. Let us know if you decide to try it or if you find something better. I have boxes of negatives. My printer/scanner/fax/copier only does a fair job of producing digital images from old prints. Better than nothing, but I'd like something better.

You can use a standard scanner, just lay the negative down and use the highest DPI settings you have. Keep in mind that the quality of the print you can produce from that is simply related the DPI you use to scan the negative.

Unless you are desperate for storage space I would retain the negatives anyway. I've got negatives from the 60's and 70's of my parents and they are still good.
