To our Buddy...
FOR BUD
Last Friday, my parents lost Buddy. He had been failing all summer. He was losing weight, and had become lethargic, not willing to get up and go, which was his usual self.
After a trip to the clinic, it was determined that he wasn’t going to improve.
These are the things that we learned from Bud :
Big dog, big feet.
When you ask your vet, “How big is this little guy going to get ? And he tells you, “I’m not sure, we will have to wait and see.” He is lying. He just doesn’t want to scare you.
Having a dog is fun. Having a 135 pound dog is an adventure.
A big dog dressed as a daisy gets lots of treats when Trick or Treating.
Cigarette smoking is bad for you.
Eating them is really bad for you.
The people at the Emergency Animal Clinic are very nice.
The couch is a good place for nap, but the bed is better.
Mini blinds are no match for a dog that wants to kill the chipmunk on the other side of the glass.
A 135lb dog on your lap is really heavy, but the love feels so good.
Having someone so glad to see you when you come home that they run like a crazy person through your house, is a wonderful thing to come home to.
A dog is a great ice breaker. Bill and I met thousands of people because of him. People were fascinated by his good looks. He was so beautiful. He loved to get off the boat, and greet people.
Sailing with him made the adventure all the sweeter. He was up for anything, especially ice cream. He was the official dock dog at our marina. People knew who he was before they knew us. We loved being his people. We loved having him as our friend.
Going for a walk on the beach with your best friend is fun.
Giving and receiving unconditional love really IS all you need.
When you are sad, a dog hug really sooths the spirit.
So here we are at the end of a wonderful journey. We feel sad, but are so grateful for the memories we have of a special dog that came from the pound, and changed our lives for the better. Because of him, we learned much, loved much, and never did we laugh so much.
Good boy, Bud. Good boy…

I love your farewell to Buddy; I feel like I knew him. I had the vision of him running like crazy through your house to greet you when he got home, but knocking pictures & candles off tables as he went, as my "boys" sometimes do!

Wonderful Tribute
Seldom does a human get that kind of tribute after their passing. I was so touched by everything you wrote. I especially love, "We loved being his people. We loved being his friend". I know he touched so many lives. Thank you for sharing him with us. My thoughts are with you.

Beautiful tribute to your friend. I hope writing helped you "get it out". Grieving takes time.... I dreamed of one of my departed pups last night, I always feel like it was a little visit from his spirit. Love from a real dog person-- A

Thank you everyone for your kind words. By posting this story about Bud, I wanted people to know not only how much we loved him, but that a doggy from the pound can be a wonderful loving animal, just as much as an AKC. My heart really goes out to the dogs in pounds everywhere.... when I went to get Buddy, my mother and I found ourselves standing in the kennel crying, wanting to take all the dogs home. There was something special about Buddy... he was a large pup, so they caged him with all the other large breed, older animals. He sat there quietly, with his tail wagging, waiting for me to look at him. I knew as soon as i saw him that he was "the one". :) Bud was almost almopst 10 years old, and we will cherish the time we were given with him, and miss him dearly. My daughter (who is the little girl in the picture walking him down the beach) told my mom (her Meme) that "Buddy was now in Doggy Heaven, and it was nice there..they have water and lots of dog treats, and his other dog friends were there playing with him."
