I. Areas of Concerns
Management of Outlet
Define the standards for outlet management
Determine managing agency and regulatory contacts
Ensure dunes are not impacted during dredging of outlet
Digging of outlet in a straight line
Maintaining Water Quality
Address septic tank systems in Gulf Trace
Address storm-water runoff from 30-A
Address and define source of nitrogen; especially in groundwater
Determine potential influence of pesticides/herbicides
Utilize bridges to reconnect the lakes
Define impact of prescribed burning
Hurricane Impacts
Address source of hurricane debris
Protect impacts from seawalls and walkovers
II. Potential Solutions
Management of Outlet
Establish guidelines for standard set of procedures
Develop a contact list for issues/responsibilities related to the lakes
Identify and advertise a specific contact person for the County
Make information readily available to the public on the County website or dunelakes.org
Education and Informational Needs
Inventory of shoreline vegetation
Increase education/advertising of the global rarity of the dune lakes through state agencies
Utilizing tourism dollars from the state and the TDC to increase awareness of the lakes
Water Quality and Storm-water
Put water quality information (using charts) and other lake information on website
Protection of lake through public land acquisition
Add link to environmental health bacteria monitoring results
