"Addicted To Plastic" - free film shown 9/24/09 by SWCC
"Addicted to Plastic" is a film of a global journey to investigate what we really know about plastic and why there is so much of it. The documentary will be shown at the Sept. 24 public forum at the Coastal Branch Library sponsored by the South Walton Community Council. The program begins at 7 pm and is open to the public at no charge.
The film encompasses three years of filming in 12 countries on five continents. It includes two trips to the middle of the Pacific Ocean where plastic debris accumulates. There is a wealth of expert interviews on practical and cutting edge solutions to recycling, toxicity and biodegradability. The film has been described as an absorbing, shocking, only partially reassuring odyssey.
A representative of Walton County will speak following the film to lend a local reference to the plastics problem.
The forum is one of the SWCC series of monthly presentations designed to educate and entertain the public on matters of timely interest. For more information call Ella Caro at
850-231-6038.

I recently saw this film on Sundance Channel. It is very interesting and eye opening.
From a local perspective, it is frightening to see the explosion of plastic garbage here in our waters. Particularly a few items that are washing up on our beaches in alarming numbers, namely plastic bottle caps, plastic toys, and small plastic shards from all manner of items.

This sounds like a must-see. So glad to see SWCC doing more and more of this kind of programming.
While stuck in sick bay this week, I've been watching lots of Sundance Channel environmental stuff. Seems very well done, well researched and balanced, and usually offers some solution or hope that viale solutions are underway.

Here's the main e-address I have for SWCC. Maybe it would help to contact them (I think Pres. Ella Caro catches these messages) and ask how to get back on the e-list?
And here's the e-address I found on their website for Exec. Director Anita Page: soutwaltoncc@earthlink.net

I wish more businesses would consider the implications of all that plastic. We love to eat out on 30-a, but I cringe at all the plastic we get. Everyone serves kids in plastic! Major kudos to George's who at least uses corn-based disolving plastic cups! I so wish Rosemary Beach had recycling available. I also cringe when I see all the beach chairs and toys that get picked up by the garbage truck to go to the landfill. This sure would make a good service project for some young volunteers! Hope we can work on it someday.

A number of other local eateries are using biodegradable go-ware, including Raw & Juicy, Summer Kitchen, and Amavida. I try and vote with my feet and my dollars by supporting businesses that are making this kind of effort.
