Jellyfish but no flag

Why wasn't there a purple flag posted at the Winston Lane beach access in Inlet Beach today (Friday)? My wife and I went in the water at around 10 a.m., and only after getting stung did we happen to look east and see both yellow AND purple flags at the South Orange St. site. Whoever's in charge of the flags needs to be sure everybody gets the message!

I walked several miles of beach this morning and didn't see any jellies. Must be working their way West. Thanks for the warning. What kind of Jelly was it? Sounds like a Nettle.

Below is from the SWFD website: The change was in progress, the lifeguards come on duty at 10.00 and must have changed the Sth Orange St flag as soon as they got there.....

Daily SWFD Surf Advisory:

***
SURF ZONE FORECAST: WATER TEMP: AROUND 82 DEGREES. WAVE HEIGHTS: AROUND 1 FOOT. RIP CURRENT RISK: MODERATE...A MODERATE RISK OF RIP CURRENTS MEANS THAT WIND, WAVE AND TIDAL CONDITIONS DO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF RIP CURRENTS. MODERATE RIP CURRENTS CAN BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS FOR WEAKER SWIMMERS. LAKE WASHOUTS AND SOFT EDGES OF SAND BARS CAN ALSO ADD TO RIP CURRENT DEVELOPMENT. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE BEACH FLAGS AND IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHETHER ITS SAFE TO ENTER THE GULF, CHECK WITH A LIFEGUARD OR STAY NEAR THE SHORE. The flag is up now on Winston. Sorry, but I don't know the type of jelly -- enough of them and stinging enough to drive us outta the water.

i think some need to chill a bit. its the ocean, one never knows what will be in those waters. perhaps learning these waters is better than depending on local officials to hold ones hand. its late summer, jellyfish hit these waters every year around the same time.

its things like that that bring lawsuits on to our county. someone gets stung or bit and if theres no flag its the local officials fault-please

I was stung several times the last 2 weekends at Grayton, so were some of the kids. They weren't bad- just mildly irritating- the kids didn't cry, and the sting faded in about 30 minutes or less. Not enough to keep us out of the water.

it may have not been a direct sting if it didnt bother the kids much. the tenticles break up in the surf and those alone do put out a little sting, but an actually sting would very likely take a kid down. ive known several adults that were moaning about it for hours.

...a flag for those dang dog flys would be great--made it hard to enjoy the emptier beaches this week (maybe that's why they were emptier ). Having a difficult time deciding whether to blame Bush or Bernanke.

That's why I think Ash is right- they were nettles- more irritating than stinging. We never saw a jellyfish for the hours we were in the water.

I have some video of the jelly fish I've been seeing in the water of late. But I actually thought the purple and gold flags were the county expressing their love for the L.S.U. colors. Go Tigers. Btw, in my latest video, 'Uncovering Octopus and Chasing Dolphin', toward the end, I showcase a number of different kind of jellyfish. They are not labled by name, but I do show a number of them. The Octopus are certainly worth a look, as is the pipefish and dolphin jumping. Good day to ya!

I saw a couple of jellies in the water this past week, one was very tiny, and I saw a larger black one earlier in the week. I was in the water everyday but luckily saw none when swimming. I did notice the purple and yellow flags late Friday I believe and yesterday, they were both still flying this morning.
