Anthony and Sherry Head of South Walton Turtle Watch Group witnessed a loggerhead nesting on Aug. 2, 2009
Loggerhead lays eggs near Stallworth
Anthony and Sherry Head of South Walton Turtle Watch Group had a pleasant surprise in the early morning hours of Aug. 2. While walking the beach for the group, they came upon a mother turtle in the midst of laying her eggs. Thank you for sharing Anthony and Sherry.
When we came up on her, she had already dug the body pit and nest cavity and was busy dropping eggs. It takes just a few minutes to cover teh distance from the water to the nest, maybe 10 - 15 minutes to dig, another 10 - 15 to drop eggs, maybe 5 to rebury everything and camoflage the nest and a few minutes back to the water.
The whole incident from when we got there was not more than 15 minutes.

Wow the turtles have also started leaving flags to identify their nests.
I walked up behind and placed the flag about a foot behind the turtle to identify where the nest cavity was because we knew as soon as she covered the nest she was going to be throwing sand all over the place to camoflage the nest and this way we wouldn't be guessing on where to put stakes to mark the nest and keep the size to a minimum.

Thanks for being a dedicated turtle walker volunteer. The video was awesome.
