Western Lake Outflow Opening Soon?
Just received a call from our reporter on the scene at Grayton Beach- Mia Hamilton.
Western Lake sounds like it is getting closer to opening. It is bigger and closer to the Gulf than it was yesterday, and waves are coming over the "lip" of sand that is the last barrier.
Maybe we will have 2 openings in one week!!

Yep, let us know when "the water breaks"!
Are others going to break through soon? I'm seeing a lot of high water and sunken piers.

Usually the only ones to break are Eastern,Western and Oyster. But I think Oyster has been re-engineered so the other 2 are the only ones to do it "naturally"
EDITfrom the looks of the cam it should happen right in front of that truck. The sand looks really wet and that is usually the only reason people stop there.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. Several other of our coastal dune lakes also open up just like Western and Eastern. That is one of the things which makes these Lakes so rare in our world. Big Redfish and Little Redfish are probably open right now, though I have not looked. Water levels of the Bay are also high, partly due to the large amounts of rain and partly due to the Moon's pull.

Re: Western Lake Outflow Opening Soon?
I guess those (Big Redfish and Little Redfish) dont get quite as much attention and I have never personally witnessed those 2 doing it. But I can believe that ANY of them would be open after the last few days of rain we've had. But I would think that as low as the north sides of those have been that they would have room to hold that amount of rain.

Re: Western Lake Outflow Opening Soon?
With Eastern and Western Lakes being our two largest in WalCo, their openings are usually much larger than the others. Also, Western and Eastern Lakes have much more development around them, so they are more often noticed, as many of the other Lake outflows are off the beaten track. Camp Creek and Big Redfish have been holding water out to the beach for a while. These smaller lakes will often flow out more often than Eastern and Western, but they don't always get that flow of Gulf water coming back in.

Where is the Western Lake outflow? Is it the place where it winds through Grayton State Park by the Red Bar and I then drag my kayak to the ocean?

Re: Western Lake Outflow Opening Soon?
Is the "Pass" at Grayton aka the Western Lake outflow?
If so, you don't want to be standing in the way when it breaks. However, it may be a more gentle flow when it opens naturally.

That thing is full as a tick. Swollen is the best way to describe Western Lake. Our rain gauge says 3 1/2" just this afternoon/evening- maybe it wil open this weekend!

I thought it might open this AM but not yet. A full moon and Christmas spirits are almost sure to free the fish by Christmas morn.

Kurt's post prompted me to include the Eastern Lake outfall on my walk today. It's full, too. But not open just yet.

Re: Western Lake Outflow Opening Soon?
The lake was already VERY full, but yesterdays rain pushed it way beyond its creeping into the yard. It is now under the house, flooded the boat house and halfway in the driveway blocking access to the mail boxes. Our neighbors downstairs has 2 inches of water inside.

Water in the house, sucks, but you cannot blame that one on Worth Williams. It's just the give and take of Mother Nature.

Re: Western Lake Outflow Opening Soon?
No Grayton Girl, you aren't really missing anything. I was just poking at the people who live on Eastern Lake, who said that Worth Williams, a property owner who added sand to the beach beside his house located near the outflow, caused the Eastern Lake not to open for the last two years. I kept making comparisons of Eastern Lake to Western and Big Redfish, which were on a similar opening cycle, and neither of those two had a property owner adding sand at the lake outflows. So, I was just driving that nail in deeper, now that the comparisons are more visible. Sorry water is getting under your house. It has to break open soon. Seems like it will be over 30A if it doesn't open soon, but don't worry, it will open very soon. As Jdarg said, it's as tight as a tick on a Bloodhound.

The lake opened up this afternoon. We got there about 4:15 and it was maybe 6' wide. When we left at 5 it was 30' or more. I'd been monitoring the beach cam for evidence that the lake was open - thanks Kurt for the cam! Jdarg, I'm sorry I didn't have your cell # to call and tell you.
I don't have pics, but I know some sowallers were there with cameras. I'm sure they'll post.

I was watching the cam all day and right about that time it looked like there was some digging going on.
Thanks for the heads up. There are some happy critters bolting for open water.

We stopped on our way home tonight- looks like we missed the "rapids"! But it loks like it will still be interesting in the morning.
Hey Garner- how funny we were talking about the lake opening right before it opened up? We have ESPN.
Bummer part- Kate is coughing like crazy and wants to put on her wet suit for tomorrow. Aye yi yi...

Opened yesterday afternoon- looks like it was opened by backhoe, from the tracks we saw last night. But it's still flowing today- playtime after school!
