Politicking on Sundays in sowal
Now on a more serious note. Some of us were talking last weekend, and the rule in nowal is you do not politick at all on Sundays. Hard to understand, but frowned upon. So taboo that I had to volunteer to ask, the others were scared to even mention it aloud.
But the culture being different in sowal, is it really so bad to try to do some canvassing, door-to-door work, on a Sunday afternoon? Gas being so high it is hard to justify driving down there for an hour or two after work in the afternoons.

I don't welcome unsolicited politicking any day of the week, so I am the wrong person to ask.
But it is an election year so a caveat to the candidates - if I get a prerecorded message on my phone from you, I will vote for your opponent!
If I get more than 5 prerecorded calls from you in a day, I will consider it harassment and call the po-po!

I agree with you on the pre recorded calls. They are a nuisance. Just so darn cheap. But much rather have volunteers making personal calls.
I have been told repeatedly this year that to get off those lists, go vote and vote early. The RPOF is really going to try to work the voted lists and remove people from everything they do as soon as they see they voted. That will allow them a better opportunity to call those that have not voted more often.

Just say no. If any solicitor comes knocking on my door, he or she may die a slow death being eaten by Locusts and Georgia Thumpers, especially on Sunday. Grrrh!

How come the Do Not Call lists don't work for politicos? I'm a registered voter but that doesn't mean I want them to call me.

Back to Robert's question: if I understood, he's asking about knocking on doors, the meet n greet type of politicking. I actually appreciate that type of politicking (but will quickly run-off a sales-person) because you get to meet the candidate one on one.
When I first moved here, I was mowing my lawn on a Sunday and was gently reminded by a now-deceased neighbor that Sundays were for worship and rest, not work. He was old-school. That is probably still the view north of I-10.
I think you'll find that most won't think twice about you canvassing neighborhoods on a Sunday in SoWal, but you may find that most are at the beach!

You're right. I got dressed down by a 5 year old for washing my truck on a Sunday afternoon when I moved back ten years ago to DeFunk.

The door to door can be hilarious. Last election someone came by and totally misread me for their sales pitch - probably because I was home during the workday and at the sink doing dishes with a full apron on.

So I guess the consensus is no.
To be honest, most folks down here are not accustomed to door-to-door anything...vacuum cleaners, girl scout cookies, Jehovah's Witnesses, politicians. And if you find people home on a Sunday afternoon, you are lucky.
Just show up at as many meetings as you can...show folks you are not afraid to drive over the bridge (the folks on this board know that, but not sure about the general population), and get your name out there.
Signs in yards help, too. I need two of them.

Door to door knocking in a resort town can be tough, as the tourists cannot vote, and the locals won't answer the door, or are at the beach or working. For many people in the service industry, their only day off may be on Sunday, and just the thought of having politicians show up on their doorsteps would be worse than receiving the numerous phone books.
I think you could meet more locals by doing some strategic dining and drinking at the local watering holes, or going to the local events. Subtle meet and greets are much more accepted than door to door, and you likely reach more voters.
I was somewhat kidding about being eaten alive by the Locusts at my house, but the Mosquitos, Yellow Flies, Dog Flies, Yellow Jackets, and Wasps might do you in. Come down my neighbors driveway, and you might be greeted by a loaded shotgun. Watch out. In Florida, it is legal to shoot politicians who come onto your property if one feels threatened.

Signs in yards let people know you are running. I have serious doubts about how many votes they get you unless the voter already knows you. But if you, Fuzz, and your cousin next door are going to vote for me, I hope, then why put signs in your yard at the end of a dead end road? Maybe I can put them on the Bay and work on that boat traffic.

Actually, one would be on the Bay because we have all sorts of people out there fishing, wading, kayaking, messing with our crab trap, nearly every day. The other one would be on my brother's vacant property by East Shallows Drive; that way the ten or so other families who live down there know who we are supporting. When John was running I put one of his under the road sign with Daddy's name on it and nobody bothered it. (He didn't get elected either, but that's beside the point.) I can try that for you. You'd be surprised how many people hit that intersection every day now.
btw, why does your apple have a worm in it? Subliminal messaging?

If they do it the way they say they are going to do it, you should get very few if any calls. But I have my doubts.

The difference is that there are five business days of the week and only two on the weekend. Most people don't want others interrupting their days of leisure to run off people who are politicking. Even Henry Ford new that people needed a break from the working world, for relaxing and studying one's self.

Pretty much my feeling also. But the cultural and tolerance levels are so different between sowal and nowal, I had to ask. Been pretty surprised at the responses, but it is sure is nice to be able to ask a question of such a large diverse group of people.

Hey, it doesn't mean that we don't like you. Maybe you could start an "opt-in" list of people who want you to visit to talk School Board politics.

Just wanted to thank the candidates who are posting, such as Mr. Davis and Mr. Nelson. "Political etiquette", be it what it may, is always refreshing. I would encourage other candidates to post questions of this nature to get answers - it makes life easier on us all.
Also, I think I have to agree with Mr. Davis - some forms of campaigning on Sundays is acceptable. After all, most candidates have jobs they have to attend to during the week. Door-to-door though, that should be limited. Now if a candidate wants to sit down with someone who has asked them to, I see no problem.
And for voters, please, post a reply so our candidates can understand what we want from them as a community. Remember, building a good relationship through a campaign can carry over to a term of office.

Robert, the main reason I would avoid door to door on Sunday's (for your sake) is that you won't get many answers. Taken from experience, Saturday afternoons and the weekday afternoon hours are your best bet for actually meeting people. Of course, a large margin will slam the door in your face, but a lot of those people just hate politics in general. Personally I think they're missing a big opportunity, but whatever. One converted voter at a door equals a lot more by word of mouth. Most people aren't willing to badmouth a candidate, to their friends, for going door to door to meet his potential constituents, they might not like it, but they don't usually want to look foolish for trashing the guy who is trying to do his job. Of course, all of this is subject to the way it's carried out.
I've had more doors slammed in my face and more people curse me out on the phone than I can count over the course of volunteering for campaigns, lol.

Tell me about it. I had more than a few rude comments when I did canvassing for Crist. So much so that it is really hard to get back out there. Like I said in the beginning, it was a discussion among some candidates so I thought I would ask. Sunday has become my day to try to get my bearings for the coming week.

The professional political operatives know who votes and how often. They have your name, what races you voted in, what years and then can match that with how your precinct performed in previous elections. If you tend to trend toward their candidate, you will receive a zillion calls from firms from across Florida and the country until you vote. They may stop then, if you are lucky. They also know who never votes, and if they have limited resources, those aren't called nor do they receive direct mail. Television, radio, and print media is used for the broad brush effect. Internet campaigning can also be more targeted. Beware, they will tell you anything to get you to vote for their candidate. It is a business to them. The parties may monitor some of their calling, but all the illegal or business groups will call you on Sunday. They will not care how aggravated you get. They don't care if you are mad at them. Research shows how effective this type of operation is. You might ask a candidate what PR company they are using and then research how that company has performed in the past.
