Broken nose
Sam might have one. It's a little crooked but it could be the swelling. She can't breathe through it either. We had an AmazingRace night at church tonight and she took a hard elbow during one of the challenges. Poor thing even finished the obstacle course and the rest of the race for the sake of the team. She's pretty accident prone (remember those smashed fingers a couple years ago?) so I was playing it off ...didn't really think it was that serious. We got back to church and I had a nurse look at it. She recommended ice on and off every 20 min w/ibuprofen.
She was and still is in pain and she thinks it is broken. From what I've read, unless it's seriously displaced, nothing can be done until the swelling goes down. Anyone else have broken nose experience?
I drove a team of 6 for the race. It was so funn! We had 8 clues that took us all over our side of town...running into the mall to buy a certain candy, going to burger king for a toy, Tim Horton's for coffee, a fitness center for the obstacle course, and driving range where you had to hit at least 50 yards. The last challenge was stomping grapes and then drinking the juice. We came in 3rd out of 8 teams so we didn't have to do that last challenge thank goodness. Although I'm sure someone would have done it! All in all a funn night except for the injury.

Gosh,I don't know anything about broken noses (thankfully) are you taking her for an xray in the morning?
I'd love some more info about the Amazing race though (I'm always looking for something for our youth or kids at church)

OUCH! Yes, had this happen to me once. You can't tell if it's broken or fractured until the swelling goes down. Ice, keep elevated, and tylenol. Mine just ended up badly bruised for a while.
Sorry her Amazing Race ended up an episode of Survivor.

I've broken mine twice, both times playing piggy back (no nasty jokes, please ). Both times it bled like crazy, and both times they iced it, but I didn't have any bandages. Oh, and both eyes got black. I also experienced bad breath until it healed.
So sorry for Sam. I know that must be very embarrassing for someone her age.

Thanks for the laughs this morning. I feel so bad for her!
RO- I was proud .
Toots, Sam slept with an extra pillow or two under her head to stay elevated.
It's still swollen but not black and blue. Ice will be started again soon. I'll let her wake up a little more first. I'll keep ya updated.

I took a baseball off the nose in little league. Didn't need to do much as in time it took care of it self. Swelling went down and it wasn't different enought to worry with . Hope she's ok.

No black eyes thankfully. It does look a little better. I let her read this thread so she could have a good laugh about it. She doesn't get embarrassed easily. She said....everybody knows me.

Mr OL broke his during basketball and he had about the same experience. Didn't go to the dr but now when he eats his nose runs. I thought it was just when he ate spicy foods but if I think about it he does leave the table a lot to go blow his nose. ( I never know this was from a broken nose until this morning....guess I never asked )
I hope Sam doesn't get this problem...she has enough with her allergy/sinus stuff.

..This was my first thought too! Maybe Sam can tap into her theatrical side and be snooty for a while. :)
OL - sure hope it's not broken,

We reccently had a nasty little accident with my Sam. My wife accidentally slammed his little pinky in the door leading to our deck. His little finger nail is in the process of falling off. I have never seen him cry in pain like that before (and hopefully never will again).

I know it's so hard to see our kids get hurt...especially the little ones. Thankfully their fingers are a little more flexible than ours. Even in 12 years old with 3 fingers completely shut in the car door there were no broken bones. pretty amazing.

Yes been through this experience, Ouch.
You have done most everything you can do, ice, elevate and give her Tylenol or Advil for pain.
After the swelling goes down, if it is crooked you can see a doctor about realignment.
If it starts to swell, increase in bleeding or severe pain, take her to the doctor.
Good luck.

She's with Mr OL at Grandma's today. I think she thought she'd get more sympathy there. But, yeah, her Grandma is spoiling her. I think she's doing okay and still icing it on and off. No addtional bleeding or swelling.

Just got back from having it x-rayed. No fracture. I was actually surprised b/c I thought it was. ( or I wouldn't have taken her) It is a little crooked and vears to the right side. I guess it's the swelling still??? I think she's hesitant to go back to school b/c all her friends thought it was broken and told everyone that. It doesn't even appear to be bruised although I know it is. She's still in pain and it hurts to breath. She wouldn't even let the pediatrician touch it. He's the one that sent us for x-rays.

Thanks I think she just wants a reason to explain why she's in pain!
Hey, at least she doesn't have to wear one of those clear "jason" type hockey masks! That's what one of the nurses told her if it was broken and she still needed to participate in gym, sports etc.. Those things are freakyyyyy!!!!

My cousin was supposed to wear one of those for soccer because she broke her nose so often - didn't help 'cuz it was so annoying/obscured her vision it got taken off!

my break was a hair line fracture and did not show up until much later. The swelling was the problem.
If she continues to have blockage and pain, I would see an ENT.
Hope she feels better very soon. And she can use some nasal spray for the swelling, just don't let her use it often or more than a couple of days.
And OL, a small bag of frozen green peas makes a great ice bag, very pliable. When my daughter was playing sports our doctor told me to always keep a couple of bags frozen.

Thanks, she already uses Nasanex so the dr just said to keep it up. I will keep the ENT in mind. I think the ped said something about that this morning before he sent us to x-ray. Yeah, the frozen peas have been a staple since Mr. OL's ...ahem..."surgery".

This whole trauma must have weakened Sam's immune system. She now has a nasty stomach virus. Dylan is home too. He hasn't been throwing up like Sam has but he complained of a stomach ache this morning and started crying. He went back to bed and has been there since.
She said her nose is a lot better.

Stomach virus? The poor girl can't catch a break. But Dylan can catch her stomach bug. Get out of the house now OL, save yourself!

See ya kids!
Dylan just got up and he's eating. Seems to be okay to me but I told him he could stay home the rest of the day anyway. He's only missed a couple of days this year. Sam just gets sick a lot easier than most kids. She was supposed to lead a tour of incoming 7th graders today. She's extremely bummed about that. Hopefully she can lead another group another day.

Sounds promising for Dylan. Being hungry is a good sign. I hope Sam gets to do the tour thing another day. When is school out for them?

11 school days and counting...June 6th. The day before Dylan's birthday. I think we're going to have a big end of the year/Dylan's birthday bash on that Friday night. I've always wanted to do a Survivor/luau themed party and saw some really good decorations that I better go get before they're all gone!

Gosh, poor Sam, nothing like a hurt nose and now throwing up, that really is the worst.
Best Wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

Thanks, she's pretty miserable and can't keep anything down. I wish there was something I could do.

Blech! That is the worst! I used to make punch (ginger ale and orange sherbet) when my kids were sick like that. Last time I was sick Beth brought that stuff over to me. Oddly enough once you've been sick on something it's no longer desirable. Feel better soon Sam.

That does suck. I hated getting sick at the end of school.

Yes the little snip snip was probably 4 years ago. And no, I don't have 4 year old peas in the freezer. BUT we do always have some in there since they worked so well for Mr OL.

UGH! Sam's stomach virus was not an isolated event! Dylan was complaining a big part of the day that his stomach hurt. We were at the pool and he didn't want to be there and that's why I thought he was complaining. He's hasn't been a bundle of joy lately so it was nothing new really. So we get home he hardly eats dinner but eats a fudge bar and an orange soda. He said he wasn't feeling that bad THEN. When it was time for bed he started complaining again. I thought it was b/c he didn't want to go to bed. Well an hour later I hear him running for the bathroom. He did not make it. Mr OL is at work...and remember from another post...I have a weak constitution. Okay, so I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to clean this up and I run downstairs to get a dust pan and Stacy (poodle) had peed on the carpet! I was ready to spit bullets. Mr OL always pulled night duty with the kids but now he works nights! This sucks big time. Sorry, needed to vent. Everything is fine...now. Dylan is on the couch and so far so good. Maybe he will come through it better than his sister. We can only hope.
