Community Walton Corporation

With so many organizations doing so many good things in Walton County, why do we need another?

Community Walton was formed as a result of then President-elect Obama's call for a National Day of Service. Seventeen people showed up at a house party hosted by Jane Burns and Robert McCullar to discuss local and national issues that were important to each of them. Near the end of the evening, it had become apparent that although Walton County has hundreds of church groups, nonprofit organizations, committees, and subcommittees, the County has no central clearing house - the one place that could match the basic, non-emergency needs of its people with available resources.

From this humble beginning back in December, Community Walton Corporation was formed as a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to begin its initial project of establishing a clearing house for non-emergency services. We discovered that in many parts of the United States, this service is available through 2-1-1, an easy to remember telephone number that, where available, connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities. Community Walton is well on the way to providing 2-1-1 access for Walton and Okaloosa Counties.

Community Walton has simultaneously worked with local utilities to encourage and assist them in implementing a Check-The-Box program that would provide their customers a simple means for making a donation at the time they pay their utility bills. Gulf Power has made this option available to its customers for many years, and we now have at least three local utilities that have agreed to participate.

There is much more happening, and we would love to see more people involved with our efforts. We work hard, we have fun, and we plan to make a difference. For more information about Community Walton, meeting dates and current initiatives, please visit our website, or send an email to cwfla@me.com.

Thanks,
Robert McCullar

Jane Burns on WZEP radio

Community Walton found a nitch that was not being addressed by other organizations. On 12/23/09 Jane Burns hosted "Senior Talk" on WZEP radio, and delivered a compelling report on the need for Florida 2-1-1 and utility assistance for certain people. Listen to the report under the "Senior Talk" tab here http://tinyurl.com/yfqajs7 Communty Walton does what it sets out to do! See Community Walton
