OMG! You have to check it out! It is the first thing in years that got my fat couch potato @ss out of the house. It is a world wide treasure hunt of sorts except that there is no real treasure other than the thrill of the hunt. Go to www.geocaching.com and read all about it. All you need to get started is a GPS and I'll be glad to lend ya mine!

I have never heard of this but my cousin and her fiancee were telling me about some of their "treasures". At one place in Gainesville they had to go into a crowded sidewalk cafe and pull out a box from behind a mail drop. People thought they were top secret agents or something. I think it sounds like alot of funn, I just have to find my GPS which is packed away, somewhere.
Aggie, from what I ahve been told, there are spots everywhere.....

Over in Jacksonville, we had to go and fish a string that had a cache tied to it in a sewer grate outside a police department, now that was certainly interesting trying to get it done without having to explain what we were doing.
I use to see stories of geocachers getting stopped as they poked around under bridges and such.

We've seen some really amazing things when geocaching because the caches are often at some little known point of interest. One of my favorites was the 2nd largest oak tree in Florida at the entrance to a state park in Fruitland Park. And we found one at the location of the Love Canal in New York--a quirky historical kind of cache. On another we thought we were headed for a cache about 3/4 mi away and ended up walking a gorgeous, but grueling trail up and down hills to the top of a mountain ledge in N. Carolina. The GPS shows distance "as a crow flies" so it can be a little deceiving sometimes. It was so worth it though as the view was amazing and we would have never even thought about going up without the incentive of the cache. You can find caches anywhere you travel and it's a great way to get off the beaten path. You can just print out the coordinates, or better yet, load them into your GPS before you go somewhere and then use them to explore an area. When you join the Geocaching site you log your caches on the site so it's also fun to look back at all the caches you've visited. We haven't done it in a long time, but I feel inspired now to dust the GPS off and get searching again!

It is a blast and I have several along 30A as do some other cachers. Aggie, go to the website www.geocaching.com and sign up for a free user name. I pay for the membership because it offers a bit more but you can still access everything under the free membership as well. When you get into the site, just find the area that says "find caches" or something along those lines. Type in your ZIP and you'll be amazed at how many are out there. If you use the google earth feature it is even more impressive.
Good luck and Happy Caching!
