Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge presents program at SWCC Oct 23

An invitation to "Come meet your woodland friends" at the next public forum of the South Walton Community Council, at 7 pm on Thursday, Oct. 23, is a chance to see some of the area's native animals up close.

The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge is presenting a program including some of their rescued "ambassador animals." The forum is open to the public and will be held at the Coastal Branch Library. It is part of the monthly series of educational forums held throughout the year by the SWCC.

The Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1994 by Destin resident, George Gray. He saw the need for a local organization devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned wildlife throughout the area. It is permitted by the state and federal governments to rehabilitate all species of wildlife, and was recently authorized to act as first responder for manatee and sea turtle strandings.

The ECWR is a nonprofit organization made up of caring staff and dedicated volunteers. Its headquarters and refuge are currently located in the heart of Destin. During the past 14 years the ECWR has cared for thousands of animals in need of help, from stranded dolphins to injured eagles and orphaned foxes. The refuge is mainly supported by donations from area residents and businesses.

For more information, call Ella Caro, 850-231-6038.
