Frogging and Yoloing

Posted 06-03-2009 at 11:07 AM by freddyfoon

Memorial Day weekend flashed by all too quickly for me and the fam--time flies, etc.

Even the rain turned out to be a bonus for us. Our condo at Redfish Village was equipped with a balcony, which was great for reading, sipping coffee and watching the showers come down. My son and I also discovered the scads of peeper frogs brought out by the downpour. We spent a lot of time chasing them around the pool deck, and I think if left to his own devices, my boy would have done nothing else all weekend long. Watching him scamper around with his umbrella over his head, heedless of the weather, made me feel like I was watching Christopher Robin himself. Which perhaps made me a sort of large, ungainly Winnie the Pooh, I suppose. He's at that age of wonder that will be over all too soon.

The weather cleared for us, more or less, each afternoon, so we were able to get out and about. Thank goodness, otherwise, we would have missed Yolo boarding. Tom Losee, one of the inventors of these things, introduced us to them on Western Lake at the WaterColor boathouse. I haven't had this much fun on the water since I first got up on a pair of skies. The Yolo (for You Only Live Once) board is a molded plastic craft that combines elements of the kayak, the surfboard and the canoe. Floating on the water, it looks like a long, broad surfboard; the underside of it is molded into a trio (if I recall correctly) of stabilizing keels.

I should be working!

Posted 05-20-2009 at 03:42 PM by freddyfoon

I should be working hard, here at my day job, but I am just too excited. Tomorrow is trip-prep day and Friday, wife, son and I return to 30-A for a couple of precious days of clear air and crystalline waters.

We manage to come down from Atlanta several times a year thanks to our work with The Thirty-A Review--please pick up a copy if you haven't seen it, it's free. My wife (the lovely Julie Herron Carson) is the major talent and writes the big features, while I (Neville Carson) tag along to write mostly dining reviews, which I love doing.

It's our being from out of town, I think, that enables us to write about our experiences with a particular wonder--at least I hope that comes across. We've been doing this for about three years now and are still like kids in a candy store whenever we come down. We drive and drive, and then, in a single turn, it's as if we've entered a different country full of things we love to do. Our son, Nick, can spend a whole afternoon just looking for cochinas in the surf, with us trailing along behind, or helping search.

If I can keep it up, I'll be using this space for occasional notes on our adventures. Hope it will be a little diverting, once in a while.

Cheers!
