Hands across the sand happening

Posted 02-13-2010 at 10:38 AM by Caroling (Wholeo SoWal)

I'm so excited about this event that is the first I can think of where everyone near the beach that is of like mind on a community issue is coming together outside on the beach at one time.
It is Valentine's Day Eve, 2010 and we're about to make some fine history. Think I'll post my latest photo of the access where I'm going: Eastern Lake. Hope to get video and do a before and after, maybe.
Well, tried jpg and tif and no photo will upload. Sorry.

On the Journey of Eating Consciously

It’s been a while…after finishing school, having a busy summer, organizing the Back to Nature Festival, and participating in the Environmental Forum, I’m going back to the things I love - besides family & friends of course: writing, growing food, and designing spaces.

Who saw Food, Inc. at Mountain Film? Did it fundamentally change the way you think about food?

I’ve read Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Stolen Harvest, and recently The Hundred Year Lie.

I’m an omnivore that was once a vegetarian.

I feel sadness for animals that meet their death on our roads.

I’ve studied sustainability.

I wear leather and sometimes leave on the lights.

I’m human and subjected to the same sensations of hunger, appeals for a “better life” through omnipresent advertising, and pressed for time due to the societal pressure to “succeed” or at least pay the bills.

I’m not a repetitive machine.

With each story that is told and lie that is exposed, the veil is slowly lifted to reveal an evolving conscious eater.

It feels hopeless sometimes, knowing that our bodies carry an average body burden of over 700 man-made chemicals, or that over 75% of our meat comes from four major corporations, or that we can’t seem to squeeze another hour out of the day to prepare whole foods.

We are not machines. We do have a conscience. We possess the ability to revolutionize...

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

What an incredible past 2 weeks! Kinda hard to figure where to start but I guess it should be with the big fish- Really BIG Fish! There has been a school (pod?) of Whale Sharks living in the Grayton/Seagrove area for at least the past 12 days. They have stayed within about a 20 square mile area and while they haven't been feeding on the surface everyday we have had several days where not only would at least one stay on the surface they would let us get the boat right next to 'em and even let us swim with them, totally unconcerned about our presence. You have no idea just how "big" a 35 foot long fish is until you swim along side one!

Like I said-they would swim right by the boat!

A full view, hard to judge size with no perspective.

Feeding on the surface with a mouth 8 feet wide!

For a little perspective- That's me cruising along with one we estimated...

Railroad vines help protect South Walton beaches

Posted 07-25-2009 at 08:04 PM by Walton Outdoors

Railroad vine blooms near Blue Mountain Beach.

Beautiful summer plant strengthens sand dunes

Always a pleasant sight along our sand dunes, the beautiful blooming railroad vine is also an important protector of our sand dunes. As with the sea oats, the plant helps to stabilize the dunes by rooting at nodes all along its length, and is often planted for that purpose.
Each flower opens only once, in the morning, but keep blooming almost all year long, peaking from May through November.

The railroad vine is native and part of the Convolvulaceae (morning glory) Family. It is an herbaceous vine that grows wild on ocean shores from Florida to Texas and Georgia.
They open in the early morning and close before noon each day that the plant is in bloom. Small, round seedpods that contain four velvety, dark brown seeds appear on this plant after flowering.
General Information:
Scientific name: Ipomoea pes-caprae
Common name(s): railroad vine, beach morning glory, goat's foot vine
Railroad vines can run as long as 100 ft.
