The diary of a guy who wishes he could speak better espanol

Percolated, pressed, dripped, or vacuumed? African, Asian, North, Central, or South American? Medium, Full City, Viennese, New England, or Dark? Organic, fair trade, shade grown, or commodity? Bitter, sweet, nutty, chocolaty, fruity, or earthy? Regular or decaff? Robusta or Arabica? Cappuccino, latte, mocha, or espresso? Cream, sugar, or soy? Mmm, coffee...

Coffee is said to be the second most traded commodity in the world, behind crude oil. Starting with the 9th century discovery story of Kaldi and his goats in Ethiopia it has taken the globe by storm. As the world evolved into today's complex globalized society, we quickly absorbed regional treasures of biodiversity that foreign lands offered. And once we got a little taste of that delicious biodiversity, boy did we get addicted. So addicted, that it is hard for many of us to fathom starting a day without our cherished cup, or cups, of coffee. Despite the fact that coffee in mainland North America and Europe is the farthest thing from a local product, it has often become the heartbeat of our communities. Cafés have traditionally been center pieces of local communities where creativity is sparked by a magical bean and anything from revolutions to business plans are discussed. But where does...

On the Journey of Eating Consciously

It’s been a while…after finishing school, having a busy summer, organizing the Back to Nature Festival, and participating in the Environmental Forum, I’m going back to the things I love - besides family & friends of course: writing, growing food, and designing spaces.

Who saw Food, Inc. at Mountain Film? Did it fundamentally change the way you think about food?

I’ve read Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Stolen Harvest, and recently The Hundred Year Lie.

I’m an omnivore that was once a vegetarian.

I feel sadness for animals that meet their death on our roads.

I’ve studied sustainability.

I wear leather and sometimes leave on the lights.

I’m human and subjected to the same sensations of hunger, appeals for a “better life” through omnipresent advertising, and pressed for time due to the societal pressure to “succeed” or at least pay the bills.

I’m not a repetitive machine.

With each story that is told and lie that is exposed, the veil is slowly lifted to reveal an evolving conscious eater.

It feels hopeless sometimes, knowing that our bodies carry an average body burden of over 700 man-made chemicals, or that over 75% of our meat comes from four major corporations, or that we can’t seem to squeeze another hour out of the day to prepare whole foods.

We are not machines. We do have a conscience. We possess the ability to revolutionize...

Back to the Water Cooler

Plastic bottle or stainless steel? This NY Times Op piece by Daniel Goleman and Gregory Norris sums it up. How Green Is My Bottle?

To summarize, if you think you will buy more than 50 plastic water bottles in your lifetime, then stainless steel is a better environmental choice.

If you only plan on buying one, then plastic has less of an impact on the planet.

Read the story...

...it doesn't get much better than this.

The photo doesn't do this breakfast of eggs benedict justice. Before my significant other could take the first bite, I quickly whisked it away for a photo shoot.

Earth Day - April 11, 2009

Posted 03-30-2009 at 09:39 AM by goleudy

Occasionally, we're given the opportunity to make a difference in our community. This week we were handed a chance to give back to our community when my friend Kathy Barrs from the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Panama City Beach asked us if we would produce a public service announcement for Earth Day on April 11th. We jumped at the chance to support such a wonderful cause! Here's the spot which will be running on WMBB and Knology. Please come by on the 11th to check it out if you are in town. Did I mention there would be free hotdogs???

Please visit Diva Productions - Cinematography & Photography: Earth Day - April 11, 2009 to check out the spot and to get more information
