Augusta, Georgia residents can reconnect in a unique way with some of their most famous citizens with a trip to The Beaches of South Walton and Walton County, Florida.
George Walton of Georgia, signer of the Declaration of Independence, had his home in Augusta, Georgia. George Walton’s home, Meadow Garden, was also the home of his son George Walton, Jr., the namesake of Walton County, Florida.

Meadow Garden, Augusta, Georgia. Home of George Walton, the signer, and Walton County, Florida namesake, George Walton, Jr.
Walton’s granddaughter, Madame Octavia Walton Le Vert, would return to Augusta after the Civil War and is buried there with several of her children in the historic Walker Family Cemetery.

Visitors to The Beaches of South Walton can still see the beautiful white Florida beaches Octavia Walton wrote about as a child and enjoy classic Southern and Victorian charm. The Victorian and Southern homes in South Walton and DeFuniak Springs, Walton County, Florida remind one of the stately homes on Walton Way in Augusta.

Home on Walton Way in Augusta, Georgia resembles historic homes in DeFuniak Springs, Florida as well as some in South Walton.
George Walton, Jr. moved to Florida in 1821 to serve as Secretary of State for the Territory of West Florida, Florida and as Acting Governor. George Walton Jr.’s family moved from Augusta, Georgia to Pensacola in West Florida to join him. Walton’s father had died in 1804, but his mother, Dorothy Walton, accompanied him to Pensacola, Florida.

The Partridge Inn on Walton Way in Augusta, Georgia is a wonderful central location to explore the history of Walton County, Florida's namesake family. Florida SoWal residents and guests will feel right at home here at this historically linked hotel. A picture in the lobby may be of Madame Octavia Walton Le Vert and her extended family.

Signers' Monument in Augusta, Georgia. Two of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia are buried here. Walton County, Georgia is named for George Walton, the signer. Walton County, Florida, home to SoWal and South Walton, was named for his son, George Walton, Jr.

Historic Marker for Signers' Monument. Talks about Walton and also how Gwinnett's body was never found.

The Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, has its own history. This is a picture during the off season showing some of the work that goes on in July to make the course picture and golf perfect in April.

Gate sign at Augusta, site of Masters Golf Tournament. A goal in life is to attend one day with my son for his birthday. His April 10th birthday often falls on the Masters Golf Tournament weekend. I'm sure the Walton's, namesake family for Walton County, Florida, might have hunted or enjoyed a carriage ride near here as their homes were within hearing distance of today's roar of the crowd at day's end or perhaps the oohs and aahs of the perfect putt.

Here's some familiar names in Northwest Florida that are together in Augusta, Georgia. Walton Way from the Walton County, Florida connection and Meigs which is now associated more with Okaloosa County. Okaloosa County was made out of Walton County, Florida and Santa Rosa County in 1915. Walton County, of course, is the older and more historic county being founded Dec. 29, 1824.

Here is Walton Way street right in front of the Partridge Inn in Augusta, Georgia. I bet this is a very busy street tonight this April as the Masters golf tournament is getting underway. The Masters tournament is held just to the west of this picture. Walton County, Florida, is named for George Walton, Jr., whose father was George Walton of Georgia, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Daughter and grand daughter, Octavia Walton Le Vert, is buried just a mile to the west of here at Augusta College in the Walker Family Cemetery.

Thanks for reading my history blog, DD and Miss Kitty. Check the La Florida Map on the SF-Intro entry. Texas was part of Florida! I'll post something about Octavia and Republic of Texas President Mirabeau Lamar soon. I might add some pictures to this Augusta - SoWal blog. There is a neat hotel on Walton Way and nearby Master's golf tournament site .Posted 03-26-2009 at 07:52 AM by Brenda Rees

Thank you very much! Both are my home! How delightful to find this blog.....is this a blog? I can't remember where I am actually.
When I first bought my home in Walton Co., FL, I thought of Walton Co., GA, which is on my way to Augusta from Atlanta.....that strip also has preserved antebellum homes that survived the fires of the Civil War. Augusta was temporarily the Capital of Georgia when Atlanta was burned. Augusta University (I think the name got changed) is a beautiful campus. And, the Partridge Inn is a very funn place, with lots of history!! It's on the hill, which is where the migration took place due to Savannah River flooding. Now, the levies and the dam are keeping that under control.
Another interesting tidbit is the public high shool, The Academy of Richmond County, which was chartered as an all boys school, is the oldest high school in the country and also became a military hub during the war. That school has a stellar ROTC program to this day. And, it's a beautiful bldg.....there are a few like that in Atlanta, but unfortunately they are in disrepair. I can hardly wait for next week!!
I hope you don't mind my input. If I think of others, I'll share......oh, the Augusta National and Bobby Jones, who was from Atlanta, um Tuxedo Road, I think. He had a vision of an elite golf club and chose that hill section, founding the National, which other than Augusta being the Capital for a few brief years, this wonderful golf course keeps us on the map. Bobby Jones retired as the youngest and arguably the best golfer of all time at age 27 or 28 (can't remember).....better than Nicklas, Palmer, Woods.
Then, the Masters Tournament unfolded, which was also due to Bobby Jones, yet he never played competively. He did play the course, of course. The Masters had always been in March, but was graciously moved to the first week in April because, well, that's when it is beautiful and in full bloom. It's also tornado season here and I can remember two tournaments sounding the horn.
On a personal note: one of my BFF GF grandfather was a famous photographer. He only became famous after following Bobby Jones!
Thank you again, Brenda.....are you from Augusta, too?
30Abob, I digg Social Circle! Who knew all of us could be connected like this! Kinda' like a family reunion~~~~~

Thanks for your notes, Lynnie. We have so many connections from SoWal in Florida to Augusta, Georgia . One of my very dear friends here in SoWal is a PGA official and works the Masters in Augusta. I am a native of Walton County, Florida, and my family has historical ties to Florida over 200 years. I so enjoyed my recent tour of Augusta and stay at the Partridge Inn. All roads run both ways.Posted 03-31-2009 at 10:50 PM by Brenda Rees
