Dog Bites

Posted 05-18-2008 at 02:12 PM by metheothertwin

I have to say right off that I’m not much of a dog person.

It’s not that I don’t like dogs. I just feel uneasy when I’m around them and I’m not sure where this stems from. I was never attacked or chased down by dogs as a child, never had any negative experience at all really. But when I encounter one, particularly a dog whose head is at groin level or a breed with an unfortunate killer reputation, I sense a deeply inbred intelligence, a yearning to dominate and challenge. There’s an overwhelming feeling of being observed with an instinctual malice. Perhaps I’m wrong. Maybe they just want to play, to engage me as if I were a walking plaything. Or chew toy.
My friends, Henry and Frank own a pair of beautiful Border Collies named Mamie and Bess. They are devoted to them and as with most people who own dogs, treat and pamper them like they are their children. These are kind and loving relationships between dog and man but this ‘dog bug’ has never bitten me.

On a visit to Henry and Frank’s house, my knock on the door is greeted with the double barking and ruckus of Mamie (May-me) and Bess as they barrel down the stairs to engage the intruder. Once they see it’s me, they quiet down and allow me to peaceably enter. I too relax but still entertain a lingering memory of Frank and Henry telling me on first meeting the dogs, specifically not to stare at Mamie.
“Don’t stare at Mamie,” they said in unison. “She’s...

The entire 1300+ acres of the airport development site have been cleared and grubbed. This means all trees, roots, and vegetation have been removed.
The main access road ahs been brought to its final elevation, compacted, sub-base installed, curbed, and is ready for paving in early July.
The building pads for the Terminal, Terminal apron, and main parking lot have been finalized.
The building pad and parking area for the rental car facility has been finalized.
The primary runway taxiway is in the process of being graded and stormwater ditches are being installed.
The primary runway is being graded and brought to its final elevation.
Stormwater ponds and conveyance systems have been installed and erosion control applied in all of these areas.

The earthwork portion of this phase should be completed by November 2008, a full 3 months ahead of schedule.
We should start the paving of the runways before October of this year.

The design for the terminal, public safety building, control tower, air cargo, and maintenance buildings has been completed and bids will be solicited in early July.

The project is well underway and a substantial amount of work has been completed in the last five and a half months. The attached aerial pictures taken earlier this month might give you a full appreciation of the size of the effort and progress.

Getting to the Marina in a Timely Manner (the bike path blog)

Posted 08-08-2008 at 05:56 AM by angryfishcharters

This week ends up being an extremely busy week for all of us at AFC. Several offshore trips this week with bluewater and plenty of wahoo, quite a few dolphin and a few unusuals and mystery bites. However the marlin have eluded us this week, (although the wahoo and a couple of sailfish have cooperated),and we are crediting a full moon and the Braves bullpen with the loss(es). On the inshore front, the bite continues with several good red snapper limits posted, a number of king mackerel, grouper and the like. We had some truly great clients this week, as seems to be the norm for us and we consider ourselves very fortunate indeed. Thank you all.

One of our families this week were a bit late to the marina and the matriarch lamented that they were a bit delayed due to cyclists on route 30A that were riding two abreast and preventing traffic from flowing as normal. Her question, "why don't they just ride on your bike path?", just has to be answered with all the alacrity of a Rumsfeld press conference.

At the risk of sounding like our wives who seem to have to return to the Pleistocene era in order to describe a stop at the gas station, we really do need to provide some history in order to permit the greatest level of understanding. So please indulge us this bit from the Wayback machine.

Health Cost Soaring? Best Therapy For Addiction Still Affordable!

Posted 03-17-2009 at 11:41 AM by johnb

While most treatment programs and therapy for addiction carry a hefty pricetag, many people are unaware that the program that has proven to be the most effective in the world is quite affordable.

How about free? Alcoholics Anonymous and its many offshoots have demonstrated their effectiveness to be greater than programs like the Betty Ford Center and Narcanon, yet operate on the voluntary contributions of their members.

The vast majority of therapy/treatment programs are multifaceted, but strongly emphasize participation in AA or another 12-step program as imperative to recovery. Aftercare usually is founded on a regimen of meeting attendence and continued participation. As a veteran of several $10,000+ treatments, I personally feel that AA and the 12 steps was the "main active ingredient".

THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT IMMEDIATE, FREE HELP IS AVAILABLE TO ANY ALCOHOLIC, ADDICT, GAMBLER OR FAMILY MEMBER SEEKING HELP.

This resource is available at times and places convenient to all and no one that I know of has ever been turned away. Money is never the issue or a requirement to participate. Most in attendance toss a dollar or two in the basket that is passed if they desire, primarily to assure these meetings can continue.
