any jobsite will have pallets, and if not, plenty of wood cuts in the dumpster to fuel your fire. i know people that get their entire winter's fuel source from the dumpsters.

Most of the wood from job sites is pressure treated and releases toxic gasses when burned. :nono1:

most is a pretty expansive term. yes, i will add the disclamer: skunkape, do not take/burn the PT wood(which you will find heavy and quite dense), take the untreated pine, of which there is plenty and quite distinquishable...
don't burn any railroad ties or telephone poles that you may find in dumpsters either.
and the red plastic containers may have contained gasoline at one time, be careful.

Skunkape,
I have two wooden pallets left over from some sod that was delivered to my house. I was just about to get rid of them. You are more than welcome to incinerate 'em.

Will do. Just PM me when you want to come by and pick them up.
I know you're not burning these on the beach but I thought I would make a note - in addition to the info about pressure treated I've seen people burn pallets and other construction lumber on the beach. This will leave a lot of nails behind so please burn natural stuff only.

I guarantee you that they will quickly be removed, but currently, there are about 35-40 recently emptied pallets across the parking lot from Cassine Station, where some guys are doing a brick paver job.

I heard the library at Auburn burned down. The real shame was that some of the books hadn't been colored in yet.Steve Spurrier

There are several pallets in a vacant lot across from my house that have been there for months. I would love to see them gone, pm me for further details...I would even be willing to haul them for you for a small fee

Pallets are a huge problem to get rid of. You can't give them away.

From the Louisiana Festivals website--
Bonfires on the Levee
Lutcher, LA
December 24, 2006
There are probably close to ten different events in Louisiana that have a bonfire as their focal point during the holiday season, but nothing comes close to the Christmas Eve Bonfires on the Levee. On Christmas Eve, thousands of spectators converge along a stretch of River Road between Lutcher, LA and Gramercy, LA to enjoy the spectacle of dozens of burning bonfires set against the backdrop of the Mississippi River.
Thanksgiving week is the unofficial start of the bonfire building season for families that live in the river parishes of St. James and St. John the Baptist. It has evolved into quite a family tradition of planning and hard work - resulting in elaborate wooden creations. Eventually, more than a 100 carefully assembled towers of wood line the top of the levee at about one block intervals, waiting in anticipation of a mass lighting on Christmas Eve. Although there's no concrete theory about the origins of this tradition, the favorite one bandied about is that the fires help show Santa the way to homes in this area.
Many people view the fires from their cars as they creep along in the traffic on River Road, but to truly enjoy this event, you should walk along the top of the levee from one fire to the next. Spectators meander all over the levee, standing in front of one bonfire and then moving on to the next. Often, friends and family of a particular bonfire builder have set up chairs or sofas around the bonfire. As you pass by, there might be offers of gumbo being cooked up on the spot over a butane flame.
This is a grass roots event. There isn't an official sponsor or a particular starting point or ending point. People enjoy the spectacle, the camaraderie and the spontaneous conversations that occur. While the bonfires are burning, teenagers and kids entertain themselves and others by setting off firecrackers and whirling noisemakers.
The midway point of the string of bonfires is located between the towns of Lutcher and Gramercy, about an hour west of New Orleans. The flames start with a loud whoosh at 7:00 p.m. sharp, and the bonfires tend to burn for at least a couple of hours. This holiday event is not a religious one, but it is high-spirited and a beautiful sight to see against the night sky. Don't forget your hot toddies.

If you are still looking for pallets, there is a large stack in the parking Lot behind Quincey's in Seaside. I think they would be very happy to get rid of them.
As of this morning, there are some 25 pallets piled up on the beach directly across from our rental house here in Gulf County.
It's as if someone was hoping to light Santa's way or something.

Well SOWALers, looks like this very Irish weather will prevent a bonfire this year:( Dargvader was so excited about stealing pallets to light-up the night sky too:( JDarg called at the last minute wondering if we might be able to rig up some tarps and a propane tank and burn stuff under that. Of course I nixed that idea, but I was sober at that time-had the eggnog and brew been flowing by then this probably would have sounded like an amazingly brilliant idea:lol: There is always next year. Until then, I hope everyone reading this has a bountiful visit from Papa Noel and remembers the birth of a pretty sharp Jewish kid about 2000 years ago that we commemorate tonight:biggrin:
