I do, but I think I'm too far away to be of any help.

I meant to say French Fries, not Fried Apples, and Timmy is Uncle Timmy (SoWal). Le mot sur la rue est qu'il mangeait le pâté et la nuit passée française parlante. (c'est une petite ville, oncle Timmy. Le mot était déjà sur la rue avant votre ami est jamais arrivé pour vous joindre.)

Thank you, Kimmifunn. I was starting to feel inadequate because I was having a hard time translating. (And in the back of my mind I was hitting Merman up for another trip to Paris since my French was so rusty... ;-) )

Indigo Jill, have you met Chickpea yet? She speaks fluent French. She might have a lead or two for you.

Well, it's a tricky one--pommes are apples in French, and pommes de terre (literally "apples of the earth" or dirt apples, I suppose) are taters, but pommes frites are actually French fries. Go figure. :idontno:

Thanks for clearing that up, Peapod!! I always get in trouble when I start second guessing myself!!

:rolling: That was good, SJ! I haven't spoken with Peapod but I will PM them. Thanks! I took 6 years of Spanish, 2 years of Italian and what do I go and do? Marry a Frenchman  Go figure. I can pretty much understand but can't speak it (well I can but my accent ces't horribe) and I want my boys to have instruction so they can talk with my husbands family, all of whom don't speak a lick of English! My husband speaks a bit to them in French but I, being the "primary caretaker" up to this point because of the demands of his job, couldn't teach them. I am frustrated to hear they don't offer it in the schools here as I have been waiting until middle school for this! Looks like I may have to buy some courses for them afterall.

Ah, and there's a good example of why Oncle Timmy shouldn't teach anyone French- in the Quebec French of my grandmother, potatos are patates.

Wrong pea--Chickpea's who you need, Jill!
We know someone in a similar situation--American mom, French dad. They use a technique that has a name I forget but amounts to each parent speaking only his/her native language to the children. Their difference is, the mom does speak fluent French, but I guess she doesn't use it with the kids. Funny thing is, a year ago, they moved to Mexico City!
