FDA has recalled all spinach, after the report of Ecoli bacteria in spinach! 23 people have been reported sick and 1 death from this! Do not eat any fresh spinach or fresh spinach that has been cooked! Stay tuned to the news for more details! First case was reported Aug 23rd; so this has been going on fopr a while! They have no idea where the problem source is coming from!

I heard that this morning. It includes even the pre-washed bagged spinach, so stay away, until further notice. The only way to kill Ecoli on your food is to cook it to a temp of 160 degrees and believe me, Spinach, cooked to mush, has very little nutritional value anyway.
Sounds like a cauliflower plot.

Can you say "organic farming and immigrant laborers"?:bang:

Wow.
I cooked some fresh spinach last week and had some serious issues with the trots the next day. My guys did not, but then I usually hog any fresh vegies in our house.

Thanks for the thread! I tm'd my daughter while she was in class to make sure she threw away her spinach when she got back to her apartment.
BTW on The Today Show this AM, they said to wash EVERYTHING (not just spinach), even if it says it's triple washed. I always wash anything that can be practically washed (like tomatoes, apples, etc.) with antibacterial soap. I don't know of any practical way to soap down salad greens, broccoli, meat, etc.

okay, just have to share.. someone on fark.com came up with the following..
I'm Popeye the sailor man.
I cr*p and don't wash my hands.
My strength is diminished
cuz I ate the spinach.
I'm Popeye the sailor man!
(try not to sing it in your head)

How appropriate, somewhere in that song is a "toot toot".

BTW the doctor on The Today Show also said that if the e. coli. comes from, say, rain runoff from an area with feces, it gets absorbed into the plant via its root system, so even washing the greens doesn't help.

That's surprising, considering the source of most fertilizer. How do they get around contaminating ALL crops when they use fertilizer?

Dunno. Not my area of expertise. I'm just repeating what I heard on The Today Show from their medical reporter.
I *do* know that whenever I'm in a hurry and buy a bag salad, I open it up in the checkout line. If it smells sour, I refuse to pay for it. I can't tell you how many times in the past I have gotten dinner ready, thrown a bag salad into a bowl to mix it with dressing, and smelled that awful smell. Then we either have to drive to the store when the rest of the dinner is ready or skip the salad. As a result, now I very rarely buy bag salads. The exception is the Dole salads that are in a box instead of a bag. They very rarely have that funky smell. My theory is that the greens don't get bruised in a box like they do in a bag, so they last longer. Plus there are ventilation holes in the boxes but not in the bags. This theory of mine was reinforced tonight when I heard a CDC official on the news say that one problem with bag salads is that the bag is totally sealed, so if there is the tiniest bit of bacteria, the sealed bag is a perfect environment for their rapid growth.

So guys, where do you think the field workers go to the bathroom when they're out there ALL day long?
A good friend of mine whose family owned a huge fruit farm in south Florida explained to me that the laborers do exactly that.
And as far as bagged salads, I've always still washed them. You know those factories do not do what they claim. I wash every single piece of vegitable and meat. The meat slaughterhouses are some of the filthiest places on earth.

FYI- rinsing the spinach will not kill Ecoli.

Funny - I was thinking the exact same thing - a crunchy spinach salad with hot bacon dressing! Funny how human nature is to want what we can't have!;-)
I threw away a brand new bag of spinach this morning; my bunny loves the stuff. Not sure if e-coli can affect rabbits but I'm not taking any chances!

Uh, no kidding. That's what they've been saying.
I'm talking about washing the stuff in general, on a day to day basis. That's better than just ripping it apart and eating it. ;-)

well, I have never liked bagged salads, though I have used them from time to time for convenience. there's nothing like a fresh salad you've taken the time to wash and prepare. I really can't take the smell of a bagged salad, unless it is very, very fresh - and that is very rare...

And we had just been talking about the spinach when the server came to take our order. When she asked for the spinach salad, he looked at her like she was an idiot...like where had she been that she hadn't heard about the Great Spinach Crisis of 2006???

We had a more extreme experience last night. We went out to dinner, and the waitress said that they weren't serving any salads at all, not just spinach salads.

I do not even buy bagged salad anymore. Quit that a long time ago. I just had a McDonald's salad early in the week, like Monday or Tuesday. I hope that grilled chicken bacon ranch salad I had didn't have spinach in it. They showed big fields of fresh spinach last night on the news and it is mostly grown in California. Spinach salad is a big seller on the salad counters at cafeterias. I bet they had to pull them off of their counter also. The grocery stores here have pulled the bags of spinach and all fresh spinach. And I am sure the Easy Way Produce stores here have pulled all fresh spinach also. I used to buy it there on occasion! And I love spinach salad.

Beach Runner. I have never seen the boxed Dole salads. Where do you find them? I would be interested in them. I, too, have had many a dinner ruined because of what you find when you open the bag!!!
Someone mentioned they wondered if the organic brands were better. From the last word I heard, it was a leading organic brands, Earthbound Farms, who own the company distributing the product. But... You never know.

I can always find them at the Publix in Seagrove. I've fussed at the manager at the Publix here in GA, he says he'll order them, but I've never seen them.
BTW they always think I'm crazy when I open the bag at the checkout line. I don't care -- I don't want to drive home, sit down to dinner, and have to drive back to the store to get more salad greens. It's easier to take care of it while I'm at the store.
One day I opened a bag and it just reeked. The cashier brought over the manager to smell it. He said it smelled okay to him. I recommended that he have a CAT scan because obviously if he couldn't smell something that stinky, he must have a brain tumor.

John Pruitt on WSB was giving the "teaser" for the 6 o'clock news this afternoon. This is what he said, "tonight at 6 a report on the tainted Spanish, that is believed to be the cause of the e-coli breakout."
I'm not sure he ever caught on. There was just a long pause and then a commericial. Poor John.

I heard on our radio stations today that none of the restaurants in Chicago were serving any salads either. They said the lettuce greens and spinach greens are all dumped together in the prep area and the leaves are pulled out when preparing a particular salad.

The places I've been to lately are still serving salads. I've been too skeered to order one and I took the lettuce off my burger tonight. I don't know if I'm being paranoid or what but better safe than sorry!
