View Full Version : Chains on 30A - how?

Please forgive me if this has been posted before, but I'm fairly new to SoWal.com. I have always heard chain restaurants are not allowed on 30A- is this true? If it is true, why is Starbucks still able to open? I know there is one in Grayton, one coming to Watercolor and I think Rosemary Beach too.

Thoughts? :idontno:

I have the same concern. I mean, we have Modica, Beach Java, and Miss Luciille's.

Chains are allowed, drive thrus are not.

Bah, humbug. I am so tired of chain restaurants as our my primary alternative if I'm too lazy to cook (the exception is Houston's when we go to ATL -- love Houston's). The lack of chain restaurants is one thing that's so special to us about 30-A.

I agree- I do NOT want to see chains all up and down 30A. It ruins the whole thing!

I'm an Auburn alum and Auburn was always a quaint town, but now when I drive through, I am so sad to see all the big chains all over- not to mention the cosmetic surgery center!

I love 30A and really hope it doesn't get filled up with this stuff- that Subway really irritates me too! :pissed:

PS- we love Houston's too! :)

I know all about Auburn and chains. When our Weimaraner was reallly ill, Auburn was the closest vet school, and while she was being treated, the only alternatives that I could find were chains. We ate at Ruby Tuesday's at Exit 51 the day she died. I'll never go to Ruby Tuesday's again. Makes me too sad.

My guess is that it would be illegal for the County to say that no chains were allowed, and that is probably why the County went at it from another angle, no drive-ins.

We can always boycott the chains that pop up, and support the locals

Boycotts, or the threat of, can work very well. The Subway over at the Preserve at Grayton, is one example. I rarely see more than three cars there, and I am sure that at least one car must be an employee's. Unless things change, I doubt they will renew their lease.

Someone on the Starbuck's sign thread mentioned Starbuck's Mgt style, and I completely agree. I have done some research into Starbuck's over the last few years, and I do not know of a "fast food" place which treats its employees as well as Starbuck's. Forget fast food places -- I don't know any major businesses which treats its employees as well as they appear to do. This is far from saying that Starbuck's isn't playing heavily on trend setting, addiction, social pressures (keeping up with the Jones), etc.

While I don't wish to see all of the franchises roll into the area,
I do understand the public's desire to frequent franchises with which they are familiar. At franchises, there isn't much guessing involved with menu selection and type and quality of service which one will receive when they stop in to eat. As many of you know, small towns across this country may be hit or miss when it comes to mom and pop restaurants. SoWal is no different. Heck, we even have a forum on SoWal.com for recommendations on where to eat to take that hit or miss guesswork out of the picture, but what about those who haven't looked on SoWal.com or don't want to put forth the effort. "Just get me to McDonalds so I can get my kid his fix of fat, sugar, salt and caffeine."

If you want to see local businesses survive, forget about the franchises and stick to the local places when you go to pull your $$$ out of your pocket. Take the time and do a little homework. Sometimes shopping locally is exponentially beneficial to our area, such as the case when you buy your cup of coffee at Cerulean's in WaterColor, where they serve coffee which is brewed with locally roasted beans. ;-)

I am a Alabama Alum and live here. If you did you would find out how expensive it is to get a fast meal. Do you want the Supper Club here? I think not. But it is ok to go Houston's?????

Why do all the locals sell their land to developers? What locals are left? :idontno:

Why do all the locals sell their land to developers? What locals are left? :idontno:because they laugh all the way to the bank, but primarily because someone started it, and then as more people came, the locals grew tired of people, and decided to sell out and go some place where they can hear the wind blow. :idontno: -- though some are still around and will never leave.

Come on "They grew tired" They wanted the good ol green back. Look at the Wheel House $12.5 asking price. Seagrove Village Market, Cow Girl is for sale and Cocoon's etc. They ant going stay around if the price is right.

BABY BLUE-

I never said Houston's was cheap- but I don't consider it really expensive either. I like a wide range of restaurants. I'm disappointed in Auburn because the local places are gone and it has grown out of being just a college town.

And by the way, I am here a lot. So yes, I do know what it costs to eat along 30-A.

And here is a BIG WAR DAMN EAGLE to everyone!

Couple things:
Houston's is the best restaurant in the world. It's not cheap, but it's so good I'd take out a loan to eat there every day.

If the local yocal places would have subway priced food, maybe they could go head to head. I mean who doesn't crave a "subway sandwich" sometimes. It could be worse. I mean it really could. Starbucks is pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things. Starbucks coffee is really good too. It's better than some of the coffee that tastes like breast milk!

LD- War Damn right back at you. If we don't win I'll probably die. And that's the truth. I'm going down for the LSwho game and am afraid I won't recognize it.

Why do all the locals sell their land to developers? What locals are left? :idontno:Are you referring to local coffee places which would be Starbuck's competition? If so, Ms Lucille's Gossip Parlor, Hibiscus Cafe and Guest House, Cerulean's (although that is owned by WaterColor / JOE, but still local), Modica Market, Frothy Frog, and Beach Java, to name a few.

Why do businesses sell out? More money and less work/headache.

Blah blah blah.
I love chains.
And I read trashy magazines.
And I pay $8 for 1 beer because I like to be seen places that sell expensive drinks.
But I got my hair cut at Fantastic Sam's today...and for me, that is a feat in itself.

Ok back on track. There are no more local places to eat that are not for sale. So I do not want a :banned: McDonalds here on 30-A ,even though that would be a cash machine, I am not opposed to Subway. Auburn use to have a dump called Mama Goldburgs that served subs. I use to eat there after Bama put the Aubs through the up-rights. Like we will do again this year

so houston's it is.

i think the subway may get some activity from lunch construction mainly. i wish it was not there also, because besides the big coffee store, it it the first of the chains, and inevitably, more will follow.

How funny that I get on the message board to read about restaurants for an upcoming trip to Seagrove and happen on an Auburn-Alabama insult trading session instead- like that is not a daily thing here where I live. As an Auburn alum, I understand the sadness for the "new Auburn" that is unfamiliar to many of us. Take heart, though, young people- your children will grow up and desert the place you thought they would love and it will not matter so much any more!:idontno: My daughter and my money now go to Ole Miss- Go Rebels.
