OK the storm last night fried my coffee maker :bang: thank goodness I had an old Gevalia one in storage.

My question is I need to buy a new one...does anyone love their coffee maker and would be so kind to let me know the make and model??? What does make a good coffee maker anyway???

Most any brand will do as long as it has a thermal carafe.

Krups Aroma Control® does a fine job - Costco sells them at a great price.

Whatever you buy... make sure it does not have a heating element, which burns the coffee - that's the fastest way to ruin a pot of java.

Also, a French press is good to have on hand as a back up during power outages, and tastes much better IMO.

I have a Bunn which I really like. It's not that the coffee is so much better, but it is FAST, that I like.

Yes, we believe the only way to go too, is with a thermal carafe. Nothing worse than that "cooked" taste. We've always used a Capresso brand. I believe they now sell them in stores like LInens and Things but it used to only be sold in higher end stores like Williams Sanoma. It's well worth the $$ tho.

Now if I could just find a brand of a good tasting coffee !

Bunn are among the best. People love them. The key to any coffee maker is to make sure you get a model that heats the water to a temperature that is in a specific range. Before I bought my last one I did a quick read of a coffee newsgroup and there were a few models recommended.

nothing fancy worth writing home about, but it has not failed me yet.
I also have an espresso machine, but mostly, I make coffee.

As Unplugged said, make sure you get one with a thermal carafe so that the coffee doesn't get that burned taste. We have the Starbucks Barista at the beach house. Makes great coffee, although right now it probably doesn't stay very hot because one of our renters broke the lid. Next time we go to the beach, I've got to check out the model number and call to see if I can get a new lid instead of buying an entirely new coffeemaker. Unfortunately the rental company didn't notice the damage, so we don't know which renter did it and thus can't collect any of the damage deposit.:pissed:

I think Bad A$$ Coffee in Miramar Beach still sells a really good 100% Kona that even I find good to drink and I'm really not a coffee person.

Johnrudy, have you tried any from Whole Paycheck? We've been drinking a Hawaiian blend from there that is nice--good flavor, fairly inexpensive. For a while, Aldi (!) was selling Kona and Blue Mountain--the Kona was out of this world, but it's not there anymore.

I had to Google Whole Paycheck! Didn't know what that was!! :rolling:
So, I will take a look one day soon and try some of the Kona, etc.

Just make sure how much Kona is actually in there.
I think legally a coffee "blend" can be called Kona even if it is only 10% Kona bean. But if it tastes good I guess that's all that matters--as long as you are not paying an arm and a leg (or don't mind if you do).
Peaberry is awfully expensive but pretty tasty.
I am very fond of Sumatra coffee, also Guatemalan.
We have a fancy-schmancy automatic Solis espresso machine that we love. However it now has a loose gasket or something so it's back to drip coffee until repairs can be made. Drinking drip coffee always reminds me of camping.

Right, well, it has to say blend on the package, which this did, and I'm sure it wasn't much, though I didn't bother to check how much. I guess it had just enough to taste really yummy! And, since it was sold at Aldi, it was ridiculously cheap, which made it taste even better!

This is the same coffee maker that I have but I wouldn't buy it again. The coffee is not very hot to begin with and it doesn't stay warm in the insulated carafe for very long. It is also hard to see how much water you ae putting in it. I prefer the clear water indicator on the outside of the pot - this one doesn't have that. I do like being able to grind the beans before brewing. It is also nice to turn the grind off and use ground coffee if you want to. Does anyone know if there is a difference between insulated and thermal regarding the carafe?

well, it is hot enough for me, and if you preheat the carafe, you're good to go. the water meter inside the resevoir is a pretty good indicator. can't beat fresh ground, but it is quite noisy when grinding. scared the heck out of me the first time it ground.

Agree - Grinding the beans right before brewing is the best!!

Does anyone know a cheap coffeemaker that has a thermal carafe (can't tolerate the burned taste of coffee that sits on a heating element) that makes coffee that doesn't taste like warm water with a little brown coloring in it?

I use a Mr Coffee, non-thermal, but brew a fresh cup every time, rather than a whole pot, and never have the burned taste.

LOL. I don't have the patience to do a cup at a time.Well, I brew one big cup at a time, probably equates to 3 normal cups, but that is all I brew in a day.

You gave me an idea. Maybe I'll just by the cheapo, keep the thermal carafe from the broken Starbucks machine in the owners closet, and pour the coffee from the glass carafe into the thermal one after it completes the brewing cycle.

Just bought the cheapo. I decided to go to Publix to see which carafes they had in case a renter breaks a carafe. Then I went to Wal-Mart to get a coffeemaker because I figured one would be cheaper there. Not only did they not have a cheaper one at Wal-Mart as compared to Publix, but none of the carafes at either Wal-Mart or Publix fit any of the existing coffeemakers at either place. :idontno:

I just bought a French press. Works great. Don't why I never tried this before! Makes a great cup of coffee in a short amount of time. No yucky filters to mess with. Just pure, unadulterated coffee. :clap_1:

That's the best solution, and really no trouble, seeing that you're going to bring the thermal carafe to the table away from the coffee maker anyway.

Exactly. Especially when I just walked in and the last bastards who rented our *HOME* had broken the fan in the master bedroom -- a blade was missing, the pull chain was gone. The previous renters even stole my pillow shams, as well as a list too long to enumerate! Goodbye, upscale amenities ... hello Wal-Mart brands.:bang: I really hate this because I really wanted my renters to feel like guests in my home. But if they're gonna rape it every time they're here, they will lose their guest status. Someone told me I have to treat it like a business. That's really sad to me -- I wanted to feel like a hostess.

I know, I know. I wised up and took my good dishes back and replaced them with Old Time Pottery crockery. It's a difficult thing when you realise that though it might be your second home and the thing that brings you so much joy, to the people vacationing there, it's simply a very good rental. But that's a whole nuther post.

BTW, the "Mr Coffee" coffee maker that came with our condo works as well as, and has lasted longer than, the expensive specialty coffee maker we have for everyday use in Indianapolis. Go figure!

Speaking of coffee, you must buy a bag of Cafe Select coffee flavored malt balls. By Necco. There are three flavors, latte, cappacino, and espresso. mmmmmmm coffee and chocolate... mnnnmgglhlhlglgglg (Homer Simpson sound).. I think I got them at CVS.
