Dehumidifier Question - please respond!

So, what is the proper thing to do when leaving your condominium for weeks/months at a time? Leave the air conditioner on at a certain temperature? Leave the dehumidifier on? Leave both on?

Please - any input from you veteran owners would be very helpful!

I guess either would work. If you run your dehumidifier, you will need to make sure it is connected to a working drain. I would think there would be less potential for a problem by leaving the A/C on. Set it around 84 degrees to keep the power bill down.

You shouldn't need to turn on the dehumidifier if you use the A/C, and by using the A/C, you will have less temp change, which will better protect your furnishings, too.

Some air conditioners come with timers. You can have the air conditioner running several hours a day, then flip off. Mine has not only a times, but the thermostate lets me set the humidity level. A fan feature where the fan runs 35% of the time also helps pull additional humidity out.

This way I am about to keep the humity level between 40-50% . Works well.

I would just run the air conditioning, as it will de-humidify the air some as well as cool.

Since nobody is in the unit, the major sources of humidity -showers, washing machine, dishwasher etc. will not be in use so the a/c alone should be able to handle it.

yes, the a/c at all times. Don't mess with the dehumidifier.

It seems to be dependent on several factors regarding whether you need a dehumifier or not. If you are in doubt you might call in some A/C sales people or contact a building inspector. In my little condo of about 300 sq. feet I was told to just leave on the A/C about 68-70 degrees in the summer and a little higher 72-74 in the winter. I think too it is dependent on what kind of windows you have and what type of air flow. These are all questions you need to ask someone who professionally can factor these for your particular place.

You can actually install a humidistat on your A/C unit and when you are away it will only run at the humidity level you dial it in for. This way you don't run A/C all the time. I would bet it will run 1/2 as much as using the thermostat for that purpose.
