Not a topic normally associated with the beach.
But I had to have one last week.
It was done by Dr. Eric Gallatin in Destin. I can't say enough good things about how well it went. He discussed it thoroughly and patiently with me beforehand, allowing me to choose some options to make the scheduling of the procedure work better for me. His work on the procedure itself was actually less difficult to deal with than a crown. No pain, professional and obviously experienced, explaining each step as he did it.
Highly recommended.

Thanks...Now can you recommend a funeral director?...just kidding! ;-)
Knowing where to get a decent root canal when the need arises is good information to know--take it from someone who's experienced the good, the bad, and the truly-truly ugly!

Yeah, the bad and ugly is right. I have never feared the dentist, but I've only had 1 root canal, 16 yrs. ago, by a very experienced endodontist in Dunedin, FL. It was the worst pain I have ever experienced still to this day. Even worse than 18 hrs of labor & natural childbirth. It reminded me of that scene of Dustin Hoffman & Lawrence Olivier in Marathon Man. Truly excruciating.

Either I'm lucky (unlikely) or Dr. Gallatin is highly skilled (he sure seemed that way to me). Other than the initial novocaine shots, no pain at all. Out of the chair in one hour flat. Like I said, every single one of my crowns were worse.

I had an emergency dental problem today. The first thing I did was to check the Sowal website for a referral for dental care. It turned out that I needed an old root canal cleaned up. I made my first app't with Dr. Ratcliff who took me right away since I was in excruciating pain and my face was all swollen. He took x-rays and immediately call Dr. Eric Gallatin, an endodontist, who also took me right away. I was in Gallatin's office for a little over an hour. He is a young man and at the top of his game. I would highly recommend both Drs. Gallatin and Ratcliff for any dental needs. Thanks Sowaler's for helping me out of a very painful jam today !!!!

I have bad teeth, and I've had many root canals. The pain leading up to the root canal is 10x worse that the root canal itself.
Congrats on finding a good one down there. Good to know in case I ever have an emergency, which happens!

Dr. Ratcliff is my dentist - he's the one who referred me to Dr. Gallatin. I agree completely that he's "at the top of his game". Wish everyone in the medical profession was as good as he is, both in skills and "bedside manner".
I'm glad it worked out well for you.

Dr. Gallatin also did my root canal in Oct 05. I also highly recommend him. Another dentist trying to 'help' 'started it' to relieve the pain, but it made it much worse. It was some of the worst pain ever! Dr. Gallatin was excellent, told me it was still gonna hurt, and properly medicated me. I thought the entire staff was nice and helpful.
I can't believe no one has mentioned what an absolute doll Dr. Gallatin is! Ladies, if you ever need an endodontist, run to Dr. Gallatin's office and enjoy the view!

Thanks for the information on this thread. Very good to know. And glad you're better Goofer44!
Root canals when well done aren't what they used to be. I've had a few and the most recent ones weren't bad at all (remember to bring your iPod so you can listen to music or a good story because the only problem with root canals is that they take a long time and you just sit there). I'm so thankful that our kids have much better dental care than we did when we were kids and ideally they won't have to go through any of this.
When I was a kid, I went to a dentist who didn't believe in novicane (sp?) for children and I had several fillings. Yikes... I still remember that.

Thanks for the info, timely for me unfortunately. From what I understand, he doesn't do nitrous oxide, which I need to have this done. I have an appt in Lynn Haven on the 22nd, gingerly eating on the opposite side until then, spiking on impact with hot and cold. I might call today, just to verify if he has nitrous oxide or not. If I had my preferences, I had rather be totally out!

Opps, sorry, I was getting my dentists mixed up! I have no clue what Dr. Eric Gallatin is like, although he sounds good and might be a doll too. We had a great experience with Dr. Eric Scheufler in Destin. He pulled out my daughter's teeth and was great. He is the one that I was remembering as a cutie!

I think Dr. Scheufler is a Chiropractor! LOL
Dr. Gallatin's address is 757 Harbor Blvd. (Formally Hwy 98 E) I recommend him as well.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m going to need a root canal soon, and being an old cat I need tender loving care.

Dr. Eric Sheuffler is an oral surgeon and he's great... I went to dental school with him. Glad to know that he's now in Destin. I haven't seen him in a few years...since we were both in NOLA.
