We never have anything like this, but we heard it was declared an F2 tornado.
This happened right near Mr. Mango's office  He said on the way in this morning, it looked really bad. He goes in about 6 am. Huge trees all down everywhere.
Fortunately, he was already past it on the highway coming home when it happened. He said cars were over turned etc., but no one was hurt.
This is not far from where I live. I was on the phone with a client who worked in the area and the sky turned black as night.
Must be scary for people who live in areas where these are more frequent.

around the same time as this, tornados were popping up all around dayton ohio too. the storms here didn't look that bad on the radar, the tornados really caught everybody by surprise.
We just recently had a few ourselves. Came about 7 miles from our house and another one about 20 miles. Lots of loss and not much warning. In Altanta we expect it so when we hear the thunder we gather the animals and head to the basement.

That was close  This is highly rare in our area. Scary though because it came on so quick withno warning. At least with hurricanes you get some advnace warning.

When I was still living in Virginia, we had a one tear through our yard. It was when Hurricane Ivan just wouldn't go away. I can't remember what category it was, but it was big.
Luckily we lived down in a hole in the woods, so it skipped directly over the house, but the damage to the yard was insane. All the pine tress were snapped in half, and the tops were strewn all over the place. Amazingly, nothing landed on the house, and we were all at work, so no cars were damaged.
We all ended up getting home around the same time, and we were all shocked when we saw what had happened.
And I agree with Mango... I'll take a hurricane over a tornado any day.

Mango: glad to know you are ok--that is bizarre for NY.
(I can remember being in Schenectady at my college a few years ago when the sky turned pea green and the wind picked up--and having lived in the south and midwest where these are signs of an imminent tornaoo--I was scared to death.

The Mr. and I went past the carnage yesterday on our way to see fireworks at the beach with the fam, and it was pretty wild. This tornado ripped through Westchester all the way to Greenwich Ct. You could see the path it took for miles. Went down the Saw Mill Pkway and then on the way home we were on the Sprain Pkway and one of the cemetaries was leveled. Both pkways are a good distance apart.
It was just shocking because we never se that here. We do get earthquakes though occasionally, but not destructive tornadoes.
Mango, I'm sure it was frightening! A rare event in your neck of the woods. In Texas, we spend a good part of our springs in a closet or under a mattress! Had a quiet one this year though--no rain either. Glad you are safe--sorry for all affected--I've always said earthquakes and tornadoes are to me, the scariest of Mother Nature's recipes--no warning to speak of.

DD-the only ones affected was anyone looking for a new closet configuration!
California Closets building was decimated. Otheriwse just the poor trees and some loss of power was really all that happened. Some people had minor injuries, but it could have been a lot worse. The earthquakes are far and few between. One woke me up one night, but no damages ever. :D
That's not funny--but funny! It's odd how tornadoes just skip along and one structure can be leveled and 10 feet away, nothing. Wierd.
